What is a Homograph?

A homograph is a word that is written in the same way as a word in another language but has a different meaning.

There are many different language character types in the world. Some characters look almost identical even though they belong to a different character type.

In the domain world, a homograph is used to create a visually similar domain to similar the website address of a known brand or company. It is almost impossible for a website visitor to tell the difference between a homograph domain or email address and the real thing. Homograph domains are often used for phishing attacks, as attackers can register similar domains to trick unsuspecting users into thinking they are visiting a legitimate website.

What is Homograph Protection (Homograph block)?

The Homograph Protection service is a Unicode-based IDN domain protection service designed to protect brands that subscribe to DPML from homograph phishing attacks.
