How Does DNS Work?

It works with servers called DNS servers located in various parts of the world. This system makes a connection between the domain name and the IP address without you are aware of it.

    DNS Protocol
    The DNS protocol uses two types of DNS messages, such as queries and replies. Both queries and answers consist of a header and four parts: question, answer, authorization, and an additional field:
  • The Header section, contains the Definition used to match the responses to the queries; Flags; Number of questions; number of answers; number of authorized resource records (RRs); and Number of additional resource records.
  • The flag section, contains one or four-bit segments that indicate whether the message is a query or a reply; if the current packet is a response, a status, or a request; whether the DNS server is authoritative; whether the client wants to send a recursive query (“RD”); whether the DNS server supports recursion; whether the request was interrupted (“TC”); and finally the four bits indicating the status.
  • The question section, contains the domain name and record type being resolved (A, AAAA, MX, TXT, etc.). The domain name is divided into tags and each tag is preceded by the length of that tag.
  • The answer section, includes resource records of the queried name. If a domain name has multiple IP addresses associated with it, it can appear in multiple records.
  • Protocol Transport
    DNS primarily uses the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) on port 53 to serve requests. DNS queries consist of a single UDP request from the client followed by a single UDP response from the server. Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) is used when the response data size exceeds 512 bytes or for zone transfers. Some DNS resolvers use TCP for all communication.
