Mauritius's Economy
In Mauritius there is no mine that can be evaluated and there is little workable soil. Soils are poor in phosphate. However, the land, where abundant precipitation and fertilizer is used, allows the production of sugarcane. Half of the island is cultivated. Sugar production is very high and constitutes the main industrial product of the country. Moreover, the country has a guaranteed market with stable prices at the European Economic Community (EEC). Sugar cane is grown in 90% of the treated soils. In the soil which is not suitable for growing of this plant, tea and tobacco are grown. Garden lands and farm animals provide food for domestic consumption. But most of the land is allocated to exported plants. Mauritius is obliged to import rice, the main foodstuff.

There are five main population groups on the island: approximately 69% of the population is from the generation of those who migrated from India. These are divided into two groups: Hindus (53% of the population) and Muslims (16% of the population). Hybrids from African-European, African-Asian blends account for about 27% of Chinese populations and about 3% of the population and French origin represent only 1% of the population.

English is the official language of the country, but it is the mother tongue of a very small minority. French is spoken by French origin and hybrids. The language of hybrids, which is a simplified French by the introduction of some of the African languages, is widely used as a language of common agreement. Other important languages are Hindi, the Hindi spoken by the Indians, the Urdu language spoken by Muslims and the Chinese spoken by the Chinese.
