“.tr” extension domain names were managed by NIC.TR under METU (Middle East Technical University) for many years. However, as of September 14, 2022, this responsibility has been transferred to domain name registrars operating under the supervision of BTK (Information and Communication Technologies Authority) through the newly implemented TRABIS (TR Network Information System) infrastructure.
With this change, there have been some important updates to the registration and renewal processes of “.tr” domain names:
Domain extensions such as “com.tr”, “net.tr”, “org.tr”, “web.tr”, “biz.tr”, “gen.tr”, “name.tr”, “info.tr”, “tv.tr”, “tel.tr”, “bbs.tr” are allocated without documentation on a “first come, first served” basis.
Extensions like “.av.tr”, “.bel.tr”, “.dr.tr”, “.edu.tr”, “.gov.tr”, “.pol.tr”, “.k12.tr”, “.tsk.tr”, and “.kep.tr” can only be registered upon submission of appropriate documentation.
.TR domain names can be registered for a minimum of one year and a maximum of five years.
Since the "first come, first served" principle is adopted, reservation of domain names is not possible.
The use of Turkish characters (ğ, ı, ü, ş, ö, ç) is allowed. These domain names are also registered based on the “first come, first served” rule.
If the renewal process is not completed by the expiration date, the domain name will be suspended for two months.
After renewal, the total registration period cannot exceed five years.
If no renewal request is made within the two-month grace period, the domain name becomes available for re-registration. However, applications are not accepted for a period of one month after the domain is released.
The information about the re-availability of the domain name is published on the Trabis website.
