In 1661, it was acquired by the British East India Company. In 1815, Napoleon Bonoparte was exiled to St. Helena and died here in 1821. In the South African War of the Boer (1899-1902), the Dutch were imprisoned to the British and were held on the island until the end of the war.

Less than one third of the island is suitable for farming or forestry. The main products are corn (corn), potatoes and green vegetables. Poultry, sheep, goats, cattle and pigs are grown.
