About Saint Martin-France
Saint Martin is a tropical island north of the Caribbean Sea, 240 km east of Puerto Rico. The area of the island is 87 km² and roughly divided between the Dutch Kingdom and France.
The island was dedicated on November 11, 1493 by Christopher Columbus, in honor of the St. Martin Tour, which was the day of the feast. The salt, which is the natural salt of Europe, which is valuable for a scarce commodity in Europe, has changed several times between the Dutch and Spanish hands. In 1648, the Dutch returned to the island to find out that they had signed a party agreement that the French had occupied. The sugar cane plantations (the ancestors of many of today's inhabitants), committed by the black slaves, were important for a time, but declined in the 19th century.
Saint Martin, part of the Netherlands (south) part of the island, has coastal lagoons, salt pans and sand saliva. In 1828 the Netherlands became part of the West Indies and was one of the original regions of the Netherlands Antilles Federation, which was founded in 1954 and resolved in 2010. Saint Martin is now an autonomous state in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The capital is Philipsburg. The government is increasingly interested in tourism, as it encourages the exploitation of the island's most precious natural resources (clean beaches and pleasant climates).
The French (northern) part of the island, Saint-Martin, has beaches and forested hills. Guadeloupe formerly belonged to the French overseas department, but in the second half of the 20th century it developed rapidly. Trade develops in the capital Marigot.
