WHAT IS A .CO.IL DOMAIN

.co.il Domain: Israel's Commercial Domain Zone

.co.il is the commercial zone under Israel's country extension .il. The .il zone entered the root on 24 October 1985, and the sponsoring organisation in the IANA record is the Israel Internet Association (ISOC-IL). The allocation rules are collected in the association's 'Registration Rules — Rules for the Allocation of Domain Names under .IL'; the first version of that document goes back to December 1998 and the text is still being amended today.

ISOC-IL describes the zone as an open second-level domain, stating that co.il and .org.il carry no constraint as to the identity of the holder or the use made of the name. co.il is primarily intended for entities operating for profit, but that is a statement of purpose rather than a documentary condition. By contrast net.il, ac.il, gov.il, idf.il, k12.il and muni.il are restricted and open only to defined institutions.

Allocation follows what the rules call a first-to-apply, first-served basis: the earlier valid and complete application recorded in the registry is examined first. You choose an allocation period of one, two, three, four or five years, and renewal applications are accepted during the last three months of the period. Management of a name can be moved between accredited registrars at any time. Check the name you are targeting with domain search.

Watch the renewal window: The rules tie renewal applications to the last three months of the current allocation period. In practice that cuts both ways: try to renew months before expiry and the window is not open yet, leave it too late and the name can return to the application pool. The option of allocating up to five years exists to reduce exactly this risk — a long registration removes a deadline you would otherwise have to track every year.

In short: for .co.il the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .co.il, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .co.il address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 5 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .co.il Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • ISOC-IL describes co.il as an open second-level domain and states that it carries no constraint as to the identity of the holder or the use made of the name. The zone is primarily intended for entities operating for profit, but that is a statement of purpose. The same status applies to .org.il. The restricted zones are net.il, ac.il, gov.il, idf.il, k12.il and muni.il.

  • The rules leave the allocation period to the applicant: one, two, three, four or five years. The same options apply on renewal. The five-year option was introduced in 2020 and its purpose is to remove an annual renewal deadline from your calendar. Renewal applications are accepted during the last three months of the current period, so keeping that window in view is the practical way to hold on to a name.

  • The rules tie allocation to the order of applications: the earlier valid and complete application recorded in the registry is examined first. Priority therefore belongs to whoever is prepared; there is no negotiation and no reservation. If two parties want the same name, what decides it is the moment the application was recorded. If the name you want is free, waiting gains you nothing — check it with domain search and complete the order.

  • The two open zones are co.il and .org.il. The restricted zones are:

    • net.il — internet service providers registered with the Ministry of Communications
    • ac.il — academic institutions recognised by the Council for Higher Education
    • gov.il — government bodies
    • idf.il — the Israel Defense Forces
    • muni.il — local authorities
    • k12.il — schools and kindergartens, in the form name.town.k12.il
  • Latin names are built from the letters a-z, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen, with a length between 3 and 63 characters. A name may not begin or end with a hyphen, and may not contain two consecutive hyphens. Hebrew names follow a separate scheme: the letters א-ת, digits and the hyphen, with a length between 2 and 63 characters, and the name may not start with a digit.

  • The rules are explicit: the holder may move the management of a name between accredited registrars at any time. The process runs on a transfer authorisation code, generated by the losing registrar at the holder's request, which identifies the party asking for the transfer. Your website and email keep working as long as you do not change name servers. You can start on the domain transfer page.

  • ISOC-IL has established the IL-DRP, an expedited alternative mechanism for disputes about the allocation of domain names. On registration the holder irrevocably agrees to submit to that procedure and to the decision made under it, so the process runs without going to court. If you own a mark, this gives you a route to object without litigating; keeping clear of someone else's mark when you pick a name removes the same risk at the source.
