.com.az Domain: Azerbaijan's Commercial Extension
.com.az is the commercial second-level zone under .az, the country code extension of Azerbaijan. The top-level .az zone was entered into the root zone on 25 August 1993, and in the IANA root zone database its sponsoring organisation is IntraNS, based in Baku. The rules for the zone were approved by Resolution No. 63 of the Cabinet of Ministers, dated 25 February 2019, and com.az is named in those rules among the zones open for general use.
In the Azerbaijani market com.az is the customary shape of a commercial address: a visitor reading it sees a business tied to the country straight away. The rules draw no eligibility distinction between the general zones, and separate consent is required only for reserved names. If you want a shorter, more general alternative, .co.az is available; if you prefer the country extension itself, .az belongs to the same scheme.
What the application asks for is identity data. Legal entities supply the director's identity details, the full name of the entity, its country of registration, address, contact details and taxpayer number; natural persons give name, patronymic, citizenship, address and the number and series of their identity document. Since applications are reviewed in order of receipt within at least three working days, a complete file directly saves you time. Check your name with domain search.

The stages in order, from registration to releaseDomain Is Available (Available)
A .com.az address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.
Domain Is Active (Active Period)
Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.
Redemption Period (Redemption Period)
The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.
Domain Is Available Again
Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.az Domains
The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.
-
Under the rules approved by Resolution No. 63 of the Cabinet of Ministers, the registrant may be either a natural person or a legal entity and is free to choose its registrar. The rules draw no eligibility distinction between the zones open for general use, and com.az is one of those zones. Separate consent is required only for reserved names and for the names of state bodies, international companies and associations.
-
The rules ask for a set of data centred on identity:
- Legal entities: the director's identity details, the full name of the entity, its country of registration, address, contact details and taxpayer number
- Natural persons: name, surname, patronymic, citizenship, address, phone and email
- The number, series, issuing authority and date of the identity document
A complete file saves real time in a review process that runs in order of receipt.
-
Both fall under the same rule set — the rules approved by Resolution No. 63 — and those rules make no eligibility distinction between the general zones. The difference is positioning: .az is the shortest form of the country extension, while com.az is the customary shape of a commercial address in the Azerbaijani market. If you want visitors to see a trading business the moment they read the address, com.az says so through its structure.
-
Both are listed in the rules among the second-level zones open for general use, and both sit under the same identity-data regime. The difference is practical: com.az is the established form for a commercial presence and is more widely recognised in Azerbaijan, while .co.az offers a shorter, more general alternative. If the com.az form of your name is taken, co.az remains a close option.
-
The rules make a change of ownership conditional on a written request and a new registration agreement, so a transfer never runs on a verbal understanding. The registrar must also warn the holder at least one month before expiry, and if payment is not made within 30 days of suspension the registration is cancelled. Your website and email keep working as long as you do not change name servers. Start on the domain transfer page.
-
You can see whether a .com.az name is registered, and the general state of the record, through its WHOIS entry. Because of data protection obligations, registrant contact details are published only in limited form, so a lookup will usually show the status of the name and its registration dates. Run the lookup on the whois search page, and check whether a name is still free with domain search.
