WHAT IS A .BZ DOMAIN

.bz Domain: Belize's Country Extension Built for Business

.bz is the country code extension of Belize, entered in the root zone on 3 September 1991. IANA lists the University of Belize as the manager of the zone, while day-to-day operations run through University Management Limited in Belize City, a company founded in October 2000 specifically to manage, market and promote .bz. The technical platform is Identity Digital's country-code registry system. The registry sells the extension without hiding where it comes from: its own pages state that .bz represents the country of Belize and, in the same breath, that .bz means business and is a better alternative to .biz.

Registration is unconditionally open. In the registry's own words, anyone in the world can register a .bz domain and the extension is not restricted to Belizeans or to businesses. No documents, no local agent, no residency and no tax number are required, and there is no hosting condition either, so the name can run on a server in any country. The practical limit is length: every one- and two-character .bz name is currently held in the registry's reserved list, so a new registration starts at three characters. If you need something shorter, .com.bz is open, and when your name is already taken here, .co.bz is a realistic second door.

You can register for one to ten years, and the name renews automatically at the end of its term, so nothing goes dark on the expiry date itself. If payment never arrives, the chain runs through a 45-day auto-renew window, a 30-day redemption period and a five-day delete pending stage; a name that reaches redemption usually costs an extra recovery fee at most providers, which is why the renewal should not be left that late. A transfer between registrars adds a full year to the term, so the fee turns straight into time. Check your shortlist on the domain name search page.

The registry publishes no registrant data at all: The registry runs .bz on a thin registry model, and its policy states in as many words that registrant contacts are optional. Measured on 15 August 2026, lookup responses returned only the registrar, the dates, the status codes and the name servers; the holder's name, organisation and e-mail address never appeared. The RDAP response does not even carry a redaction placeholder. The upshot is that privacy here is not a service you buy separately — it is a structural property of the zone.

Domain lifecycle

The stages in order, from registration to release
Available Before registration
Active 1 - 10 years
Redemption 30 days
Pending delete 30 days
Available Open again

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .bz address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

30 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

30 days

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .bz Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. The registry says so in its own words: anyone in the world can register a .bz domain, and the extension is restricted neither to Belizeans nor to businesses. No documents, no local agent, no residency and no Belize tax number are required. There is no hosting condition either — the registry states that any hosting service can host your .bz name, so your server may sit in any country. Measurement confirms it: .bz names are held through worldwide retail registrars such as GoDaddy, NameCheap, Porkbun and Dynadot, on a first come, first served basis.

  • One to ten years. The registry's policy sets three limits at once: an initial registration runs 1-10 years, a renewal runs 1-9 years, and the total term may never exceed ten years at any given moment. So you cannot extend a nine-year name by another nine; the ceiling is always ten years from today. The registry's fee schedule lists the one, two, three, five and ten year terms separately. A longer term thins out your renewal calendar and keeps you out of the post-expiry chain entirely.

  • Three characters for a new registration. The reason is a reserved list rather than a length rule: measured on 15 August 2026, every one- and two-character .bz name queried came back as reserved by the registry. Yet the database still holds short names handed to third parties between 2001 and 2006 — the single letter k.bz dates from 2002, m.bz and w.bz from 2004, and the two-letter zq.bz from 2005. If you specifically want a short label, the sibling zone .com.bz does not reserve one-character names.

  • Nothing goes dark on the expiry date. Names renew automatically at the end of the term, and a 45-day auto-renew window then runs, during which the registrar can still delete the name and recover the fee. If payment never arrives, a 30-day redemption period begins, followed by a five-day delete pending stage, after which the name is released. The important part: recovering a name that has reached redemption costs more than an ordinary renewal at most providers, so the renewal should never be left to that stage.

  • A transfer is a standard operation between registrars, and under the registry's policy it extends the term of the name by one full year. The fee you pay is therefore not lost — it converts directly into time. The gaining registrar pays that one-year amount to the registry, and if the name is deleted within five days of the transfer the amount is credited back. Before starting, make sure the transfer lock is released and you hold the authorisation code. You can begin from the domain transfer page.

  • It shows the registrar, the creation and expiry dates, the status codes and the name servers. It does not show the holder's name, organisation or e-mail. The reason is the registry's thin registry model: the policy states that registrant contacts are optional, and measured on 15 August 2026 the responses carried no registrant section at all, with not even a redaction placeholder on the RDAP side. The practical consequence is that privacy is not something you buy as an add-on here — the zone already works this way. Run the query from the whois search page.

  • Through the UDRP, ICANN's Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy. The registry states plainly that every registration under the .bz database is subject to it. A trademark owner can start an expedited administrative proceeding by filing a complaint with an approved dispute resolution provider; the World Intellectual Property Organization runs a dedicated service page for .BZ, and the case proceeds under the UDRP Rules together with the WIPO Supplemental Rules. A successful complainant can ask for the name to be cancelled or transferred. Going to court remains the alternative route.
