Yes, in your own name and without further conditions. Traficom states it in a single sentence: «Companies, organisations and private persons, regardless of their domicile, can all have fi-domain names registered for them.» No Finnish company, address or representative is required. The only real conditions are that the name be registered to its actual holder with correct contact data, and that you check in advance that the name you choose does not infringe someone else's protected name or trademark.

From one to five years. Traficom describes the term as «a fixed period (1 to 5 years)» and confirms that renewal runs through your registrar. Every term in between is available; a two, three or four-year registration is equally possible. The agency devotes a separate heading to renewing on time, because the window after expiry is limited and missing it ends with the name being released for registration again.

No rule published by Traficom requires documents at registration. The application page describes just three steps: check that the name is free and lawful, choose a registrar, and conclude a service contract with that registrar. What is heavy instead is the data accuracy obligation, and it carries a sanction: incorrect holder data can lead to the name being removed from the register, and knowingly entering false details in an official register is a criminal offence.

Yes. Traficom lists the permitted characters as a-z, the digits 0-9, the hyphen-minus and Finnish native characters such as å, ä and ö. The agency even publishes a punycode converter with a worked example. On the same page, however, it adds its own caution: because of technical restrictions, a name containing native characters is not recommended as your primary domain name, since email software and foreign keyboards do not always support them. No priority is granted over the unaccented equivalent.

The transfer is performed by your registrar and depends on a key: you need a holder transfer key valid for thirty days. If you want to change registrar at the same time, a second key is required — a registrar transfer key, also valid for thirty days — and you must hand both keys to the new holder's registrar to authorise it. Not through a private arbitration provider but directly with the regulator. Traficom publishes a dedicated section on domain disputes, and the route is a request to have a name removed from the register. The agency also explains the criteria separately: the acceptable reasons a holder may have for the name, and the holder's intent of obtaining a benefit or harming another party.
