com.gi Domain: Gibraltar's Open Commercial Zone
com.gi is Gibraltar's commercial sub-zone and is operated by the same body as the top level, Sapphire Networks. The rules come in two layers: the common document «Rules for the .GI Domain and Subdomains» applies to every zone, and each sub-zone has its own short page of additional rules. The com.gi page defines the zone in a single sentence: it is for the registration of names relating to commercial enterprises.
For a company based outside Gibraltar the decisive distinction sits here. The Gibraltar registration requirement in the common text is limited by its own wording to the top level «without any preceding generic zone»; the com.gi page does not repeat that requirement and adds a freedom on top: «No limitation is placed on the number of names that may be applied for or the use for which they are being put.» The registry's zone list summarises the split in one line: .gi is «for Gibraltar based companies», com.gi is for «any commercial organisation».

They are open to very different audiences. com.gi is for names relating to commercial enterprises and asks for no Gibraltar registration. ltd.gi is expressly restricted in the registry's zone list: registration is limited to Gibraltar registered limited companies, and the domain name must be identical to the registered company name. So ltd.gi removes the freedom to choose a label as well. org.gi, in turn, is for non-commercial organisations that do not fit the other sub-zones — charities, trades unions, community groups.

The common rules apply to com.gi «in full», so four limits are live. The name must be at least three characters: one and two character names are not allowed. Generic labels such as co, com and net cannot be used at the second and third level. The name may not be used, or appear to be used, for pornography or any other activity that is illegal in Gibraltar. Names the Committee may consider offensive or defamatory are refused. Allocation follows first come, first served.
