Yes, at the level of a declaration. The regulator's annex reserves com.gr for «those carrying on commercial activity», and since 22 December 2025 that has been a formal statement attached to the registration: the applicant declares that they hold the capacity for which the shared name is set aside. The definition does not require a legal person — a sole trader or a self-employed professional carrying on commercial activity holds it too. Someone with no commercial activity cannot make the declaration truthfully, and a registration made on a false one becomes a ground for deletion. In that case .gr at the second level is the safer route.

No. The registry states that names in the .gr space are assigned to «domestic or foreign natural and legal persons irrespective of their establishment in Greece or elsewhere». There is no local address, agent or trustee requirement, and no cap on how many names one holder may take. What is asked for is not a geographical link but a capacity: that you carry on commercial activity. A company based in Türkiye holds that capacity and can register a .com.gr name directly. Priority still goes to whoever applies first; there is no reservation procedure and no waiting list.

The registry, the rules and the infrastructure are the same; they part company on three points. First the capacity: .gr is registered directly at the second level and asks nobody for one, while .com.gr requires a declaration of commercial activity. Second the prohibitions: the regulator's list of geographical terms and the ban on ISO country codes bind only the second level and are not applied to third-level names. Third independence: the rules treat the two levels separately, so the holder of foo.gr cannot stop foo.com.gr going to someone else. That last point is why brand owners take both.

In two-year blocks. The term clause makes no exception for third-level names: the exclusive right of use acquired by assignment lasts two years from the date the registration declaration reaches the registry, and the assignment may be renewed indefinitely for successive periods, with the holder free to renew several periods at once. So there is no one-year, three-year, five-year or seven-year .com.gr registration; the term moves in two, four and six. On renewal the new period starts at the end of the previous one rather than at the filing date, so renewing early costs you nothing.

Two characters. The name composition clause sets the variable field at two to sixty-three characters and excludes from that count both the .gr suffix and shared second-level suffixes such as com.gr, so what is counted is only the third-level word you choose. Measurement confirms it: querying a two-character .com.gr name returns «can be provisioned» from the registry, while a single-character query is rejected as an invalid domain name. Yes. No paperwork is asked for at registration — the name is checked automatically, switched on temporarily within three hours and assigned definitively five days later. But since 22 December 2025 failure to evidence the declared capacity is a ground for deletion, and the procedure is written out: the regulator's president suspends the name on the authority's own motion for thirty days; if the holder produces documents showing the commercial activity within that window the suspension is lifted, and if not the name is deleted. The same thirty-day window applies to any .gr name whose registration data is doubted. Keep the email address you register with reachable.

You get fifteen days. When the exclusive right of use ends the name is switched off, and throughout those fifteen days nobody but you can file the renewal; at the end of the period the name is released for good and any interested party may register it. The release runs daily between 00:00 and 01:00 UTC. The thirty-day grace plus redemption chain familiar from generic extensions does not exist in this zone. The registry sends warning emails 91, 61, 31, 16, 6, 3 and 1 day before expiry, to the registrar, the holder and every contact recorded for the name.

There are two separate operations. For a change of registrar you request the authorisation code the registry generates; it is sent only to the email address recorded with the registry, is valid for a limited time, and you hand it to the new provider — the duration of the registration is unaffected. A change of holder is a different procedure, carried out with transfer documents obtained from your registrar, and it is chargeable. One warning specific to .com.gr: the new holder must hold the commercial capacity too, otherwise the ground for deletion arises after the transfer.
