WHAT IS A .MG DOMAIN

.mg Domain: Madagascar's Official Country Extension

.mg is Madagascar's country code extension, entered in the root zone on 25 July 1995. The zone is run by NIC-MG (Network Information Center Madagascar), based in Antananarivo; the organisation describes itself as the official manager of .mg domain names for more than thirty years. Its rules are maintained by an Administrative and Technical Committee that registrars and industry representatives may join. The governing text is the bilingual .MG Domain Name Charter dated 29 May 2023.

Article 2 of the charter closes the question of registering from abroad in a single paragraph, and more openly than most: the applicant may be a natural or legal person, the applicant may reside abroad, and the administrative contact representing a legal entity need not be located in Madagascar either. Where most country extensions require at least a local contact, that condition is absent here too. All that eligibility requires is set out in article 3: two nameservers with their IP addresses, and complete contact details for the administrative and technical contacts. No document list appears anywhere in the charter.

Registration goes through an accredited registrar rather than NIC-MG directly, and article 4 sets a first come, first served rule. That same article carries an important warning: NIC-MG conducts no prior rights search, so verifying that your chosen name does not infringe someone else's trademark falls to you. The registry's own published figure places this zone among the small ones — the number shown on 11 August 2026 was five thousand registered names, which means short, memorable names still stand a good chance of being free. Check your candidate on the domain name search page.

Renewal happens by default; cancelling is what takes action: Article 9 of the charter sets up a registration as a subscription of at least one year that is renewed tacitly, so you do not have to submit a renewal request. The reverse also holds: if you want to stop the renewal, your termination request must reach NIC-MG no later than the expiry date of the name. If the fee is still unpaid one month after expiry, the registry may deactivate the name, and it only becomes available again three months later.

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: for .mg the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .mg, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .mg address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 5 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 90

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 90

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .mg Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Yes, and the charter says so in a single paragraph. Article 2 of the naming charter states that the applicant may be a natural or legal person, that the applicant may reside abroad, and that the administrative contact representing a legal entity need not be located in Madagascar either. So no company registration, no local address and no local contact are required. You complete the registration through an accredited registrar.

  • No. Article 3 of the naming charter limits eligibility to two items: two nameservers with their IP addresses (primary and secondary), and complete contact details for the administrative and technical contacts. None of the charter's eighteen articles lists documents for a registration. Documents enter only indirectly: if you request one of the reserved names in article 8.3, such as an institution, community or geographic name, you need prior authorisation from the body concerned.

  • Two characters. Article 8.1 of the charter states that names of fewer than two characters are not permitted, while the maximum is 63 characters per label. Permitted characters are only the letters a to z, the digits 0 to 9 and the hyphen; a hyphen may not sit at the start or the end of the name, and every other character including the dot is forbidden. The same article adds a rule seen in few extensions: a name may not consist of digits alone.

  • No. Article 8.1 of the naming charter restricts permitted characters to the letters a to z, the digits 0 to 9 and the hyphen, and states that all other characters including the dot are forbidden. Because no accented or non-Latin letters are admitted, the charter contains no internationalised domain name provision either. Upper and lower case are also treated as identical, so writing the name in capitals does not create a separate registration.

  • Article 9 of the charter sets the minimum term at one year and describes a registration as a subscription that is renewed tacitly, so you do not need to submit a renewal request. The text defines no maximum term. If you want to stop the renewal, your termination request must reach NIC-MG no later than the expiry date of the name, because tacit renewal takes effect after that date.

  • Article 9 of the charter sets two thresholds. If the renewal fee is still unpaid one month after expiry, NIC-MG reserves the right to deactivate the name. The name itself only becomes available again three months later, at which point anyone may register it. A name the holder terminates voluntarily, by contrast, becomes available immediately under article 14 and can be registered again.

  • Yes. Article 13 of the charter states that a holder may request the transfer of the management of their name from one registrar to another, and that the request is made online by the destination registrar. The article also carries a real safeguard: the former registrar may not oppose the transfer, except where an outstanding balance or a dispute exists between them and the holder. You can start from the domain transfer page.

  • Article 15 of the charter points to one route only: where the registration and abusive use of a .mg name infringes a third party's trademark right, the UDRP applies and the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center is the sole dispute resolution body. The name stays active and is locked throughout the procedure, and NIC-MG makes no changes to it. The UDRP route does not preclude going to a competent court, and a final court decision is enforced.

  • Article 5 of the charter lists the zones with their purposes: com.mg and co.mg for commercial entities, org.mg for organisations and associations, edu.mg for universities and educational institutions, gov.mg for government bodies, mil.mg for the military and national defence, prd.mg for development projects, nom.mg for individuals and tm.mg for trademarks. If you want a commercial address, com.mg and co.mg share the same definition.
