WHAT IS A .COM.LK DOMAIN

com.lk Domain: Sri Lanka's Flexible Commercial Zone

com.lk is Sri Lanka's commercial domain zone, managed by the LK Domain Registry, sole administrator of the .lk namespace since 1990. The registry presents direct .lk registration and the second level zones as separate products; the zones it names on its own pages are com.lk, org.lk, edu.lk, web.lk and hotel.lk, alongside a package option covering all second level .lk zones at once.

In this country the flexible zone is com.lk, and the registry's own policy says so. A long list of prohibitions applies directly under .lk — personal names, country names, names of towns and provinces, names denoting Internet services, single character names. The policy's exception clause then states: «It may be possible to register some domain names which are not permissible under .LK, under open second level domains.» A name refused directly under .lk may therefore still be available here.

There is no local presence requirement; the registry states plainly that foreign individuals and companies can register either through it directly or through Agents located in Sri Lanka. Terms run for one, two, five or ten years. One technical detail is worth knowing: com.lk is not a separately delegated zone — its names are served straight from the signed .lk zone. Check whether your name is free on the domain search page.

A com.lk name cannot be sold or transferred: The section of the registration policy headed «Domain Transfer / Reselling Policy» applies to com.lk too, and settles it in two sentences: domains may not be sold nor offered for sale, and any such domain may be de-registered; the registrant does not have the right to sell or transfer the domain name to any party, whether for profit or otherwise. The policy separately states that the registrant holds a right to use the name but not to own it, and a change of ownership is allowed only for a genuine reason such as a company name change or a business transfer. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .com.lk address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 90

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 90

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.lk Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Yes. The registry's question and answer page states: «At present, there is no local presence requirement. Therefore, foreign individuals and companies who do not have a local presence can register their domains either through LK Domain Registry or through Agents located in Sri Lanka.» The registration policy lists NIC, passport or driving licence number as accepted identity references. Applications made for an organisation require its name, business registration number, address and phone; no restriction is written on which country the record comes from.

  • com.lk is the more flexible of the two, and the registry's own policy says so. A long list of prohibitions applies directly under .lk: personal names, country names, names of towns and provinces, names denoting Internet services, and single character names. The policy's exception clause reads: «It may be possible to register some domain names which are not permissible under .LK, under open second level domains.» So a name that could be refused directly under .lk may still work under com.lk.

  • There are four options: one, two, five or ten years. The registry's registration procedure page and its FAQ give the same list and confirm that renewals run in the same four terms, extending beyond the current expiry date. The term is not a continuous range from one to ten: three, four, six, seven, eight and nine year registrations do not exist. Ten years is the option that pushes your renewal calendar out the furthest.

  • There are two layers. The identity layer applies to every application: the registrant's name, email, NIC, passport or driving licence number and phone; for an organisation, its name, business registration number, address and phone. The category layer applies only where the subject matter is regulated — a Central Bank licence for banking, an Insurance Board licence for insurance, a letter from the principal for schools. An ordinary commercial name needs no category document. Once approved, payment must follow within three working days.

  • No. The transfer section of the registration policy covers com.lk too and states a plain prohibition: domains may not be sold nor offered for sale, and any such domain may be de-registered; the registrant does not have the right to sell or transfer the name to any party. The registry permits a change of ownership only for a genuine reason: a company name change, a business transferred to another organisation, or a new company formed by the same person. No registrar-to-registrar transfer process is published.

  • Yes, though the chain works differently than you might expect. com.lk is not a separately delegated zone: its names are served from inside the .lk zone, and .lk is signed in the root. The practical consequence is positive — com.lk names sit under the parent zone's DNSSEC protection without needing a separate DS chain of their own. Measurement confirms the structure: com.lk returns no SOA record of its own, while a non-existent com.lk name produces a clean NXDOMAIN answer.

  • Yes, during the suspension period. The registration policy describes the chain: email reminders go to the billing contact before the expiry date, a final notice goes to all contacts on expiry, and if payment does not follow the name is suspended. During suspension «the original registrant may reactivate the domain name by settling all outstanding dues»; if that does not happen, deletion follows. The length of the suspension is not published in any registry document, so do not count on a specific number of days.
