Alcohol, tobacco and vehicles, which are normally highly taxed in Norway, are cheaper in Svalbard to encourage more people to live by the Norwegian Government. By law, Norway collects sufficient tax to meet the needs of local government. None of the tax revenues go to the central government.
Since the islands are connected to Norway, economic activities are carried out here.
The estimated population of the island in 2002 is 2,642 people. 59.8% of the inhabitants of Norway, 20.4% of the Russian and Ukrainian, and 19% of the other inhabitants of Sweden, Thailand and the Philippines.
