WHAT IS A .CENTER DOMAIN

.center Domains and the Wide Reach of One Word

.center entered the root zone on 12 December 2013, and the IANA record names Binky Moon, LLC, part of Identity Digital, as the sponsoring organisation. The word points at a structure rather than a sector, since a training centre, a health centre, a sports centre, a cultural centre, a data centre and a support centre all share it. According to the nTLDstats page accessed on 11 August 2026, the zone holds 61,935 registrations.

The same page adds a telling detail: 48,656 of those names, roughly four in five, appear in the zone file. The gap consists of names that are registered but not yet in service, and it is a useful reminder that holding a name does not make it work. The root word does the separating here, because the ending alone never says which kind of centre you mean. Test candidates through a domain name search.

.center Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .center domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .center, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .center address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .center domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $4.39 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .center returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .center Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • It suits any body that gathers services under one roof. Training and course providers, clinics and diagnostic centres, gyms, arts venues, data centres and customer support units are the most common holders. What unites them is offering a set of services rather than a single product. Because the reach is that wide, an empty root leaves the address silent about the field you work in.

  • It means names that are registered but not yet in service. The nTLDstats page accessed on 11 August 2026 shows 48,656 of 61,935 registrations present in the zone file, and the remainder may be parked, reserved for later use or held purely to protect a trademark. The rule that follows is simple: holding a name does not make it work, and without name server settings the address opens for nobody.

  • Since the ending carries many meanings, the root has to do the separating. A centre serving one city gains from the city name, while an organisation with several branches is better served by the service word, because a city name grows tight as branches open. Combining the two is often the most balanced answer. Try the variants quickly with a bulk domain name search.

  • Showing licence and authorisation details on the site is the step most often skipped. Health services, course provision and vocational training are licensed in many countries, the domain replaces none of that, and visitors are entitled to verify it. The second point is booking and enrolment forms: anything collecting personal data needs an encrypted connection, which you install from the SSL certificate page.

  • It becomes worthwhile as branches or programmes multiply. The main address carries the corporate identity while the centre address gathers one defined set of services, and that division of labour reaches the visitor as well. For a single-site business the second address mostly means extra upkeep and another renewal to track. Review ownership records regularly with a whois search.

  • The word is spelled differently in British English, and visitors do confuse the two. Where your audience uses both spellings, registering the matching name under the other ending and redirecting it to the main address recovers the traffic that would otherwise be lost. Stay with one spelling on printed material, because two addresses read as two brands and weaken recall.
