Enter Ecuador market with a .FIN.EC Domain

Only institutions of Ecuador's financial system. The policy names the circle one by one: banks, finance companies, savings and credit cooperatives and mutual societies, together with financial service and auxiliary institutions. Individuals fall outside that definition, because the documents required exist only for legal entities. Measurement confirms the composition: of the 335 names counted in the zone on 15 August 2026, 169 were savings and credit cooperatives and seven were bank names.

Three of them. The first is the institution's incorporation resolution or agreement, which must have been issued by either the Superintendencia de Bancos or the Superintendencia de Economía Popular y Solidaria, depending on the case. The second is the tax identification certificate, and the third a copy of the legal representative's identity document. The first document decides the outcome: eligibility is set not by the registry but by the body supervising your institution. Starting an order before the papers are ready stalls the process at the registration step.

In practice, no. The policy carries no explicit nationality clause, but the required documents produce the same result: the incorporation resolution must come from one of Ecuador's financial regulators, and the tax identification certificate is issued only to entities registered for tax in Ecuador. A company incorporated abroad cannot satisfy either condition. The registry also defines no trustee or local agent service for this zone. Companies that want unrestricted registration in Ecuador use the .com.ec zone instead.

The difference is legal rather than technical. Character rules, the three-character minimum label length, the lifecycle windows and the transfer procedure are identical in both zones; what separates them is who may register. .com.ec is the commercial zone with no special requirement and is open to anyone. .fin.ec sits among the registry's special extensions that require documents and is open only to financial institutions supervised in Ecuador. That is why a .fin.ec address carries a verification signal in itself.

The registry publishes no per-zone figure, so occupancy was measured from certificate transparency logs: at least 335 distinct names under .fin.ec held a valid certificate on 15 August 2026. That is a floor, since names without a certificate never enter the count. The zone is genuinely in use rather than dormant: in a check against a fixed list of institutions, most of the registered names resolved to a live server. The registry's own homepage gives 52,028 for the namespace as a whole.

Requiring documents does not change the lifecycle. After the expiry date a 30-day grace period runs first, with no charge beyond the renewal itself. A 30-day redemption period follows, and recovering the name at that stage carries a fee. Miss both and the name is deleted. On a finance address registered to an institution, missing that calendar also cuts customer communication, which makes leaving the renewal to the expiry date a poor idea here.

Transfers run on an EPP authorisation code, and the registry imposes no extra restriction on this zone. You request the code from your current registrar, writing from the e-mail address held as administrative contact; the registrar must send it within 24 hours at the latest. The registry then e-mails the administrative contact a confirmation link, and if nothing happens within four days the request is cancelled automatically.
