.ec Domain: Ecuador's Official Country Code Extension
.ec is the country code extension of Ecuador, entered in the root zone on 1 February 1991. The zone is run by ECUADORDOMAIN S.A. from Quito, which operates the service under the NIC.EC brand; the IANA root zone record lists the same company as manager, administrative contact and technical contact. The registry belongs to LACTLD, the association of Latin American and Caribbean ccTLD operators, and to ICANN's ccNSO. Its own homepage counter showed 52,028 domain names across the namespace on 15 August 2026.
You do not need to be in Ecuador to register a .ec domain. The registry lists this extension among the commercial ones that carry no special requirement, and asks for no residency, no local agent, no Ecuadorian tax number and no documents. The rule to watch is length: directly under .ec a label must be at least four characters long. If you want one character less, .com.ec starts at three, while supervised financial institutions in Ecuador use the separate .fin.ec zone.
Labels may contain only the letters a-z, digits and hyphens; the policy expressly rules out accented letters, the letter ñ and the underscore, so a brand written with those characters has to drop them in the domain. After the expiry date you first get a 30-day grace period at no extra charge, then a 30-day redemption period that carries a fee; miss both and the name is deleted and returns to the open pool. Check whether your candidate is free on the domain name search page.

.ec Domain Lifecycle
What happens day by day after it expires
Day 0 is the domain's expiry dateIn short: for .ec the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .ec, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.
Domain Is Available (Available)
A .ec address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.
Domain Is Active (Active Period)
Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.
Redemption Period (Redemption Period)
The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.
Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)
If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.
Domain Is Available Again
Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .ec Domains
The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.
-
No. The registry lists .ec among the commercial extensions that carry no special requirement, and asks the holder for no residency, no local agent, no Ecuadorian tax number and no documents. There is no cap on how many names one holder may take. Measurement confirms it: names in the zone are held through registrars based in the United Kingdom, Germany and the United States. Your only obligation is accurate contact data — the registry may verify your e-mail or mobile number at any time, and false information is grounds for cancelling the name.
-
Four characters. The registry's policy separates the levels: directly under .ec a label needs at least four characters, while third-level zones start at three. The measurement of 15 August 2026 confirmed it — one, two and three character attempts all came back blocked at the lookup server, while four-character names showed as free. Three-character names fall under a separate policy and need written clearance in advance. Factor that in before you plan a short three-letter brand.
-
Not through the normal channel. The registry placed three-character labels under a separate policy because such combinations can collide with the acronyms of public bodies and well-known institutions. The request goes in writing to the registry's operations desk; the registry checks whether the label is reserved, blocked or tied to an official acronym, and if it clears, opens the name temporarily on the website. The registration is then completed at a special tariff. That clearance is not a reservation, so the name is not secured until the process is finished.
-
No. The policy states it in one sentence: accented letters, the letter ñ and the underscore are not accepted. The valid set is the letters a-z, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen; a hyphen may not open or close the label, and two hyphens may not sit next to each other. Case does not matter. The practical consequence is simple: if your brand contains ñ or an accented letter, the domain has to drop it. Ecuador differs here from several neighbouring country extensions that do allow Spanish characters.
-
Two windows run after the expiry date. First comes a 30-day grace period with no extra charge, so renewing inside it costs nothing beyond the renewal itself. Then a 30-day redemption period follows, and recovering the name during that stage carries a fee. Miss both windows and the name is deleted and becomes available to anyone. Your registrar is obliged to send three renewal reminders and an expiry notice five days after expiry; if those never arrive, you have the right to complain to ICANN.
-
Transfers run on an EPP authorisation code, and the registry keeps them free of charge. You request the code from your current registrar, writing from the e-mail address that appears as the administrative contact; the registrar must send it within 24 hours at the latest. Once the new registrar holds the code, the registry e-mails the administrative contact a confirmation link, and the transfer completes only after approval. If nothing happens within four days the request is cancelled automatically. The domain moves with its existing expiry date, so a transfer adds no year. Start the process from the domain transfer page.
-
The registry's lookup server returns the registrar, the creation and expiry dates, the status codes, the holder's name and the administrative contact's name; it does not return the name servers. No privacy or proxy service is offered, so the holder's name and organisation are publicly visible, while the postal address and e-mail are redacted. An unregistered name gives a clean not-found reply, whereas names the registry has blocked come back under a separate status. You can run the query from the whois search page.
