WHAT IS A .FASHION DOMAIN

The .fashion Domain: An Address Built for Style

.fashion entered the root zone on 23 October 2014, and the IANA record names Registry Services, LLC — the contracting entity behind GoDaddy Registry — as the sponsoring organisation. The ending previously sat in the Minds + Machines portfolio. The nTLDstats page accessed on 12 August 2026 reports 20,230 registrations, of which 12,699 appear in the zone file; roughly a third of registered names have never gone live.

The registry positions the ending for retailers, designers, manufacturers and publications that cover the industry. A short root works hardest here: a label name, a studio, a boutique. When the exact brand is gone, adding a city or a product category usually finds an opening. Check what is free with a .fashion domain search, or test one root across several endings at once through bulk domain name search.

What the registry asks you to warrant

GoDaddy Registry's Registration Policy of June 2022 lists .fashion by name and asks every registrant to warrant that the name and its use will be consistent with the mission and purpose of the TLD. The same document lets the registry review that warranty and, where it does not hold, lock, suspend or delete the name. In practice: taking a .fashion address for a project unrelated to the industry leaves the registration open to challenge later. Decide what the site will actually carry before you register.

.fashion Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .fashion domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .fashion, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .fashion address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .fashion domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $7.81 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .fashion returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .fashion Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. The registry asks for no proof of trade and allocates names first come, first served.

What it does ask for is a warranty: the June 2022 Registration Policy requires you to state that the name and its use will be consistent with the purpose of the ending. Nothing is filed at registration, but a later use that contradicts that statement opens the door to review. A personal design journal or a two-person studio meets the standard comfortably.

  • The policy allows locking, suspension, transfer or deletion once a warranty turns out to be untrue.

Two situations are covered: registration data that is not accurate, and use that does not sit with the purpose of the ending. Keeping records current is the registrant's job — changes of contact detail are expected within fourteen days. You can see what your record publishes through whois search.

  • A separate address keeps campaign material off the main site once the season ends.

It also makes advertising easier to measure and gives you something short to print on a tag. The cost is split visibility: links earned by the season page do nothing for your main domain. The rule of thumb — build a separate address for a collection line you intend to keep, and use a folder on the main site for a one-off announcement.

  • Of 20,230 registrations, 12,699 appear in the zone file — about 63%.

The remaining third are names that exist on paper but have never been pointed at a name server. For a buyer that is useful context: finding a blank page behind the name you wanted is common here. Rather than waiting for an expiry that may never come, a second candidate usually gets you online faster.

  • In practice yes, because browsers flag sites served without one.

On a page carrying product photography and a checkout form, a warning screen sends visitors back before they read anything. Issuing and renewing can be automated in most hosting panels, so this is a one-time setup rather than a chore. Compare the options on the SSL certificate page and confirm the result afterwards with the SSL checker.

  • Yes. Transfers run on an authorisation code and the registry asks for no extra paperwork.

The usual snag with fashion labels is ownership history: the name often sits with a former agency or a freelance designer, so the approval message lands in an inbox nobody reads and the window closes. Update the contact address on the record first, then start the move from the domain transfer page.
