The eight-article rulebook sets no residence, company or representative requirement in Greenland; the only declaration asked of the applicant is that the name does not infringe third-party trademark or copyright. Measurement bears this out: .gl names are held through international registrars — music.gl sits with a German registrar and shop.com.gl with another German-based company.

Currently only one and two years. The registry says so plainly in its FAQ and gives the reason: pricing is under review, and it does not want multi-year registrants to feel short-changed afterwards. The rulebook itself states that the maintenance fee is charged annually. For a long-term project this means you need to keep a closer eye on the renewal calendar than in most country zones.

The registry defines two windows: a 30-day redemption period after deletion and a 24-hour grace period that also applies to auto-renew. There is an important caveat: an expired name is not automatically free. In the registry's own words, a name is only available when a lookup returns "not registered"; seeing a past expiry date in WHOIS does not mean the name can be taken.

There is no published alternative dispute procedure. Article 2 of the rulebook states that the registry does not investigate infringements and takes no responsibility, and that all litigation is between the holder of the name and the other party. No UDRP or arbitration forum comes into play; the route is the ordinary courts. That makes screening a name for trademark conflicts, and keeping your registration records, more important here.

No. The registry's FAQ answers in a single line: IDN is not supported and there are no plans to support it. A name may contain only the letters A-Z, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen as a separator. Length, by contrast, is generous — the registry states that it allows "from 1 to 63 characters, in other words our only limitations are technical limits", and measurement confirms it: the single-character a.gl is registered.

For registrar-controlled names the transfer runs through the EPP/HTTP interface with an auth code. Legacy names, registered on paper forms in the past, carry no locks, so a transfer completes immediately once the gaining registrar supplies the right code; the holder or administrative contact can obtain that code from the registry's own facility if the email address on record is correct.
