The channel is open too: shop.com.gl was registered on 14 June 2025 through a German registrar, so international registrars can and do register in this zone.

It is the fullest of the three third-level zones. Certificate transparency logs show 923 certificates and 202 distinct names under com.gl, against 22 names in co.gl and none at all in org.gl. Even so, generic words are largely free: on 13 August 2026 the candidates mail, test, music and money were all available for registration.

The difference lies in the pool of names, not in the rules. Both sit in the same registry, follow the same eight-article text, the same one-to-two-year term regime and the same character rules, and both are signed. Registration runs for one or two years and the maintenance fee is charged annually. After expiry a deleted name has a 30-day redemption window, and a 24-hour grace period also applies. The registry adds a caution: a name that looks expired does not become free automatically — it can only be taken once a lookup returns "not registered". Transfers are currently free of charge and run on an auth code.
