.co.gy Domain: Guyana's Local Business Namespace
.co.gy is the commercial namespace under Guyana's country code extension .gy, and one of the address forms established companies in the country actually use. It is run by the same institution as .gy: IANA lists the University of Guyana, Turkeyen Campus in Georgetown, as the delegation holder, the rulebooks name its Centre for Information Technology as the operating unit, and the public brand is Registry.GY. There is no separate operator and no separate rulebook, because clause 1 of the registrant agreement applies the rules to all domains and sub-level domains ending in the suffix .GY. The agreement in force dates from 1 December 2011.
Eligibility is identical to .gy: no residency, no documents, and private individuals may hold names. Measurement shows the character of the zone. On 15 August 2026 certificate transparency logs held 66 distinct names under .co.gy against 199 under its sibling .com.gy. The names here are noticeably more local: the country's telecommunications operator uses gtt.co.gy as its corporate address and runs its own service systems beneath it, and Guyana-based companies such as Roraima Financial Holdings and Caribbean Chemicals sit in this zone too. It still takes new registrations, with craftiq.co.gy opened on 10 June 2026.
Availability is the practical draw: in the same measurement many well-known Guyanese names in banking, energy and media came back unregistered. Once a name is yours the calendar matches .gy exactly, since one day after expiry the name goes on hold and is deleted if it is not renewed within 28 days, which makes renewing early a concrete safety margin. If you already hold a .co.gy name and want its management in one place, start the process from the domain transfer page.

.co.gy Domain Lifecycle
What happens day by day after it expires
Day 0 is the domain's expiry dateIn short: for .co.gy the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .co.gy, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.
Domain Is Available (Available)
A .co.gy address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.
Domain Is Active (Active Period)
Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.
Redemption Period (Redemption Period)
The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.
Domain Is Available Again
Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .co.gy Domains
The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.
-
No. Clause 1 of the registrant agreement states that the rules apply to all domains and sub-level domains ending in the suffix .GY, so there is no separate eligibility regime for the third level. The registry's help page confirms that anyone may register .gy names and that no residency requirement exists. You need not incorporate, submit documents or appoint a local contact; a private individual may hold the name and the only personal condition is being eighteen. Measurement backs this up: holders registered in the United States, Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago sit alongside Guyanese individuals holding names in their own name.
-
On paper there is none: both are namespaces of the same registry under the same agreement, the same dispute framework and the same expiry chain. The difference shows up in measurement. On 15 August 2026 certificate transparency logs held 66 distinct names under .co.gy and 199 under .com.gy. The usage profile diverges too: .co.gy leans local, holding the country's telecoms operator, a financial holding group and domestic industrial firms, while .com.gy is dominated by defensive registrations from international brands. In practice .co.gy signals local belonging and .com.gy signals international reach.
-
One character, and without an extra pricing class attached. This was confirmed two ways. First, the single-character o.co.gy has been registered since 10 December 2022, so the length is genuinely obtainable. Second, free single letters return as ordinary available names: on 15 August 2026 the queries for a.co.gy, q.co.gy and c.co.gy all came back unregistered. That is exactly where this zone parts from .gy, where the same letters fall into the registry's premium class. For anyone after a short, memorable label the third level is therefore a real option.
-
One day after the expiry date the name is placed on HOLD, and that status lasts 28 days. The registry's deletion policy names the consequence directly: during that period the website and e-mail addresses attached to the domain will no longer work. The right to renew survives, but the service is cut from day one. If the name is not renewed within the 28 days the registry deletes it and releases it on a first come, first served basis. No separate redemption stage exists, so there is no second chance. Reminders go to the address on record, which makes keeping it current a direct protection.
-
The lookup channel is shared with .gy: whois.registry.gy answers on port 43 and an RDAP service runs at rdap.registry.gy. The response carries the domain status, the creation date, the expiry date, the registrar, the name servers and the DNSSEC state; on unmasked records the registrant's name, organisation and country appear as well. For privacy the registry defines an alternative address method rather than a proxy service, meaning a registrar may create a separate contact record for public display on request. Both behaviours were observed in measurement. You can run the query from the whois search page.
-
Transfers run through the registrar. Measurement found .co.gy names held at a range of international and local registrars, with a portion of the records carrying the registrar lock that blocks unauthorised moves; that lock has to be lifted by the current provider before a transfer. The registry also permits a change of registrant name and requires the request to come from the registrar or the current holder. The existing expiry date is preserved through a transfer, so the term is not reset. Start the move of a .co.gy name you hold from the domain transfer page.
