WHAT IS A .ORG.MY DOMAIN

.org.my Domain: Malaysia's Extension for Organisations

.org.my is the organisational category under .my, the country code extension of Malaysia. The zone is run by MYNIC Berhad, an agency under Malaysia's Ministry of Digital and the official ICANN-recognised registry operator for .MY. The top-level .my zone was entered into the root zone on 8 June 1987. MYNIC defines .org.my as being for other organisations and activities — in other words, for bodies that do not fit the definitions of the other categories.

Being that residual category is the most practical thing about .org.my. If you trade commercially your category is .com.my; if you provide network services, net.my; if you are a micro, small or medium enterprise, biz.my. Associations, foundations, professional bodies, trade unions and not-for-profit initiatives fall outside the commercial definition and therefore sit in .org.my. If you want no category statement at all, .my taken directly gives you the shortest form of your name.

MYNIC asks for supporting documents according to the type of registrant and, where documents are required, registers the name only after the application and documents have been received and verified. For associations, co-operatives and trade unions the certificate issued by the relevant registry is accepted; for organisations incorporated outside Malaysia, a certificate issued by their own country. The registrant's name must match the document exactly. Check your name with domain search.

The category choice is hard to correct later: MYNIC's registrant agreement requires the registrant to keep meeting the eligibility criteria for the duration of the subscription. If your organisation moves into commercial activity, or its legal form changes, your position in .org.my can become questionable. Base the category decision on how your incorporation document describes you today, not on the activity you are planning next. View required documents →

Available Before registration
Active 1 - 5 years
Redemption 30 days
Pending delete 30 days
Available Open again

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .org.my address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 5 years

Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

30 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

30 days

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .org.my Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • MYNIC defines .org.my as being for other organisations and activities — bodies that do not fit the commercial, network or SME category definitions. Associations, foundations, professional bodies, trade unions and not-for-profit initiatives are the typical registrants. The categories MYNIC reserves for Malaysian bodies and individuals are .edu.my, .gov.my, .mil.my, .name.my and .coop.my, and .org.my is not among them. The test is category fit plus document verification.

  • The evidence depends on the type of registrant. Associations, co-operatives and trade unions provide the certificate issued by the relevant registry. For organisations incorporated outside Malaysia the accepted evidence is a certificate issued by the registrant's own country. The name on the document and the registrant name you enter when ordering must be an exact match; where documents are required, the registration completes only after verification.

  • .com.my is MYNIC's commercial category, defined for commercial organisations and commercial activity. .org.my is the category for organisations that fall outside that commercial definition. In practice: if you raise donations, run on membership or work in the public interest, .org.my describes you correctly; if you sell goods or services, .com.my is the better category fit.

  • MYNIC's registrant agreement requires the registrant to keep meeting the eligibility criteria for the duration of the subscription. If your organisation's activity or legal form changes, your position in .org.my can become questionable and the renewal may run into trouble. Base the category decision on how your incorporation document describes you today, and update the registration record whenever that changes.

  • .org.my names can be moved between providers. MYNIC may request supporting documents from registrars and registrants to verify information for the registration, modification or transfer of .MY domain names, so keep your incorporation paperwork ready. Category eligibility continues to apply after the move. The remaining term is preserved, and your site and email keep working as long as you do not change name servers. Start on the domain transfer page.

  • You can see whether a .org.my name is registered, and the general state of the record, through its WHOIS entry. Because of data protection obligations, registrant contact details are published only in limited form, so a lookup will usually show the status of the name and its registration dates. Run the lookup on the whois search page, and check whether a name is still free with domain search.
