.my Domain: Malaysia's Country Extension, Now Global
.my is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of Malaysia, entered into the root zone on 8 June 1987, which makes it one of the oldest country extensions in Asia. The zone is run by MYNIC Berhad, an agency under Malaysia's Ministry of Digital and the official ICANN-recognised registry operator for .MY. Registration is handled through the registrars MYNIC works with, and the extension is the core address for signalling Malaysian belonging.
The turning point in the extension's recent history came in 2024. MYNIC opened the Early Access Period for second-level .my registrations at 16:00 UTC on 13 June 2024 and general availability at 16:00 UTC on 20 June 2024. In the same transition the domain lifecycle, the registration agreement and billing practices were brought closer to the standards of generic extensions. If you want a narrower definition by category, .com.my covers commercial activity and .org.my other organisations.
MYNIC asks for supporting documents according to the type of registrant, and where documents are required the name is registered only after the application and the documents have been received and verified. The registrant's name must match the document exactly; even a small difference in spelling leaves the application waiting. Some categories are reserved for Malaysians only: .edu.my, .gov.my, .mil.my, .name.my and .coop.my. Check whether your preferred name is free using domain search.

.my Domain Lifecycle
What happens day by day after it expires
Day 0 is the domain's expiry dateIn short: for .my the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .my, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.
Domain Is Available (Available)
A .my address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.
Domain Is Active (Active Period)
Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.
Redemption Period (Redemption Period)
The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.
Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)
If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.
Domain Is Available Again
Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .my Domains
The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.
-
MYNIC asks for supporting documents according to the type of registrant. Companies incorporated in Malaysia provide certification issued by the Registrar of Companies (Borang 8, 9, 13 or 83). For organisations incorporated outside Malaysia the accepted evidence is a company, business or organisation certificate issued by the registrant's own country. Individuals may provide a passport, a national identity document, a driver's licence or a utility bill. Where documents are required, the registration completes only after they have been verified.
-
.my is the short address taken directly at the second level and makes no statement about category. .com.my, in MYNIC's own definition, is for commercial organisations and commercial activity, so the address reports commercial standing through its structure. In practice: choose .my for a short, unrestricted name, and .com.my when the shape of the address should signal that you trade. Many businesses hold both and redirect one to the other.

MYNIC opened the Early Access Period for second-level .my registrations at 16:00 UTC on 13 June 2024 and general availability at 16:00 UTC on 20 June 2024. In the same transition the domain lifecycle, the registration agreement and billing practices were aligned more closely with generic extensions. MYNIC worked with Tucows Registry Services for the backend infrastructure and Internet Naming Co. for operations outside Malaysia.

MYNIC reserves five categories explicitly for Malaysian bodies and individuals:
- .edu.my — Malaysian educational organisations only
- .gov.my — Malaysian government organisations only
- .mil.my — Malaysian military organisations only
- .name.my — personal use by Malaysian individuals only
- .coop.my — Malaysian co-operatives only
The commercial and organisational categories are not on that list; there the test is category fit and document verification.
-
Eligibility is not a one-off check passed at the moment of registration. MYNIC's registrant agreement requires the registrant to meet the eligibility criteria of the .MY domain name and to continue meeting them for the duration of the subscription. The practical consequence: if your category, company name or legal status changes, update the registration record, otherwise the renewal can run into trouble.
-
.my names can be moved between providers. MYNIC may request supporting documents from registrars and registrants in order to verify information for the registration, modification or transfer of .MY domain names, so keep your paperwork ready before you start. The remaining registration period is preserved after the move, and your website and email keep working uninterrupted as long as you do not change name servers. Start on the domain transfer page.
-
You can see whether a .my name is registered, and the general state of the record, through its WHOIS entry. Because of data protection obligations, registrant contact details are published only in limited form, so a lookup will usually show the status of the name and its registration dates. Run the lookup on the whois search page, and check whether a name is still free with domain search.
