No. The registration rules list who may apply in four separate clauses, and one of them names «natural and legal persons from outside the Republic of Moldova» directly. The registry puts it in a single line on its own site: anyone can register a domain name under .md. A company based in Türkiye, a sole trader and a private individual all apply on the same terms, and there is no local address, local contact or trustee requirement. Nor is there a cap on how many names one holder may take. Priority is purely chronological: applications are processed automatically, in order of arrival, on a non-discriminatory basis.

From one year up to five. The rules in force say it in a single sentence: a name may be registered or re-registered for a minimum of one year but not more than five. You pick the term rather than being locked into a fixed block. Because a renewal is added on top of the time you still hold rather than replacing it, renewing early costs you nothing and can push your expiry date beyond five years. The point to watch is payment: registration and renewal complete only once the payment has been received and processed, so starting the order does not by itself secure the name.

Two characters. The rules set the minimum at two and the maximum at sixty-three, and separately list a name shorter than two or longer than sixty-three as a ground for rejection. Measurement bears this out: two-letter names are genuinely registrable in this zone and some remain free. Single-character names are a leftover from the regime that preceded this rule; today the registry holds almost all of them inactive and blocks their renewal, so that space is not coming back to the market. A name may contain a hyphen, but it cannot begin or end with one.

No. The registration rules define the permitted character set as digits, the hyphen and Latin letters without diacritics, and containing any character outside that set is itself a ground for rejection. The concrete consequence for Moldova is striking: even the ă, â, î, ș and ț of standard Romanian spelling cannot appear in a domain name, so those words can only be written with the marks dropped. You get thirty days, but only the first five of them keep the name working. The rules split the grace period in two: for the first five days the name stays active and your site and mail keep resolving; for the remaining twenty-five it is switched off and only the right to renew stays with you. At the end of the thirtieth day the name is deleted automatically from the WHOIS database and opens to anyone on a first-come, first-served basis. The redemption stage you know from generic extensions does not exist here. A name in the grace period can be renewed but not transferred.

This is risky ground. Moldovan law treats the .md top-level domain as state property, and the rules pass that down to the registrant: registration confers no legal right in the name beyond the right to use it. More pointedly, an attempt to resell the name is listed among the grounds on which the registry may revoke it on its own initiative, without going through any dispute or court procedure. The same clause appears in the regulator's text and in the registry's own rules. A holder-change procedure does exist and works to an eligible registrant, but positioning a .md name as a portfolio asset is not protected here.

For individuals, no. The rules set out two regimes side by side: for legal-entity holders the whois shows the organisation name, its registration code, country, dates and name servers; for natural-person holders only the country, the dates and the name servers are published, with the name and address never printed. Measurement confirms it: company-held names returned the corporate title, individually held names returned no holder line at all, and no record carried an email, phone number or postal address. A change of holder runs through the account on the registry's own portal: the party giving up the name signs in and starts the transfer, which completes with an online authorisation code. The name may pass only to another holder who meets the registration conditions, or under a final court decision. The transfer does not change the registration term, so your expiry date carries over untouched and no days are lost. Two situations close the door: a name that has become the subject of a dispute cannot move until a final decision, and neither can a name that has expired into its grace period.
