WHAT IS A .OM DOMAIN

.om Domain: Oman's Country Zone, Now Open Abroad

.om is the country-code domain of the Sultanate of Oman, entered in the root zone on 11 April 1996. The zone is run by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), which operates both the Latin-script om. and the Arabic .عمان top-level zones, writes the rules, accredits registrars and supervises them. You never apply to the Authority directly: registrations go through a TRA-accredited registrar.

Until 30 December 2025 a second-level .om name was reserved for Omanis and for entities licensed inside the Sultanate. On that date the Authority issued its «rules for registering domain names from outside the Sultanate», which opened the zone to foreign companies and changed the test. You no longer need an Omani company or an Omani trademark; what you need is a company record that can be verified online in your own country's commercial register. The sibling zone com.om uses the same door but adds a commercial-entity requirement.

What Oman does not ask for matters just as much: no apostille, no consular legalisation, no Omani notary. Your registrar checks the validity of your registration through the official search link you supply, within three days. Hosting location is free too — the rules say nothing about where your servers sit. Check the name you want on the domain search page.

What the December 2025 change means in practice: The rules ask a foreign applicant for four items: a valid copy of the commercial register in the country of incorporation, a trademark certificate if you own one, the electronic link to the government body that provides the commercial-register search service, and supporting legal documents proving the record is genuine. The third item is the one applicants overlook: the registrar verifies you through that link, so without a publicly searchable register page the application does not move. View required documents →

Domain lifecycle

The stages in order, from registration to release
Available Before registration
Active 1 - 10 years
Redemption 30 days
Pending delete 5 days
Available Open again

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .om address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

30 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

5 days

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.
