The article the rules devote to .com.pt is a single sentence, stating that names under this classifier comply with the general conditions of the rules. In practice this means there is no separate eligibility test, document list or residency requirement; the same conditions apply as for registering directly under .pt. Registration can be made through a registrar accredited by .PT or directly with the registry.

On eligibility there is none: both follow the same general conditions and are run by the same registry. The difference lies in the shape of the address and in what remains available. The transitional provision of the 2026 rules states that existing registrations under .net.pt, .publ.pt, .int.pt, .nome.pt, .edu.pt and .org.pt remain unchanged, and the two classifiers keeping their own section are .com.pt and .gov.pt. As .gov.pt belongs to the public sector, .com.pt is what is left on the commercial side.

The rules set out no standard list of documents for registration; the process rests on verification of identity and contact data. Documents are requested in two situations: where .PT has well-founded doubts about the accuracy of the information, and where the legitimacy of a transfer request must be confirmed. In addition, a sampling check may be run within 10 days of registration, with up to 4 days allowed to supply any further information.

Renewal is available online until the end of the term. Once the term ends, an additional 30-day window opens, but throughout those 30 days the name is not delegated in the .pt zone: the site does not load, email does not work, and renewal in that period carries an additional amount. If the window is not used, the name is removed and becomes available for registration again. The extra time protects the name, not the service.

The general rule is the same across .pt: a name must have between 2 and 63 characters drawn from 0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. A hyphen is accepted only as a word separator and cannot stand at the beginning or the end. Names carrying Portuguese characters such as á, ã, ç or é count as IDNs, their Punycode form begins with 'xn', and such names cannot have two consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions.

Moving management to another registrar is initiated by the registrant or the current managing body through a unique transfer code. Changing the owner of the name is a separate operation: the request comes from the current registrant or the managing body, and the transfer completes only after the new registrant's data has been verified.
