The rules impose no condition of nationality, residence or Portuguese incorporation. Registration can be done in two ways: through a registrar accredited by .PT or directly with the registry. Three conditions must be met together for a registration to be valid: compliance with the rules, successful verification of the registrant and managing body data, and payment of the fee. The data collected for the contract includes name, address, country, email, telephone number and tax identification number.

The rules set out no standard list of documents for registration; the process rests on verification of identity and contact data instead. Documents come into play in two situations: where .PT has well-founded doubts about the accuracy of the information, and where the legitimacy of a transfer request has to be confirmed. In addition, within 10 days of registration a sampling check may be run, and up to 4 days are given to supply any further information requested.

Renewal can be done through the online mechanism until the end of the term. If the term ends, the rules grant an additional 30-day window — but that window has a cost: during those 30 days the name is no longer delegated in the .pt zone, so the site does not load and email does not work, and renewal during the period carries an additional amount. If the window is not used, the name is removed and becomes available for registration again.

The rules state that names containing the special characters of the Portuguese alphabet take on the nature of an IDN, and they list those characters one by one: á, à, â, ã, ç, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ and ú. The registry notes that registration with these characters has been permitted since 1 January 2005. If your brand name carries an accent, checking and taking both the accented and unaccented spellings keeps your address from being lost to a mistyped variant.

Under article 5 a name must have between 2 and 63 characters, drawn from this set: 0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. A hyphen is accepted only as a word separator and cannot be used at the beginning or the end. The Punycode form of an IDN begins with 'xn', and such a name cannot carry two consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions. Geographical names carry a separate restriction: country, municipality and well-known city names may be registered only by the competent authority or a party it authorises.

By the registry's own definition, only names registered directly under .pt or under the classifiers .org.pt, .edu.pt, .com.pt and .gov.pt count as official .pt domains. The transitional provision of the 2026 rules states that existing registrations under .net.pt, .publ.pt, .int.pt, .nome.pt, .edu.pt and .org.pt shall remain unchanged; the two classifiers with their own section in the new text are .com.pt and .gov.pt. On eligibility, .com.pt and .pt are treated the same.

There are two separate operations. Moving management to another registrar is initiated by the registrant or the current managing body through a unique transfer code. Changing the owner of the name is a different process: the request comes from the current registrant or the managing body, and the transfer completes only after the new registrant's data has been verified. Article 3 frames this as a condition of delegation rather than of registration: a name is delegated to the .pt zone only when it is technically associated with at least two name servers. Those servers must be correctly installed, answer authoritatively for the domain name, and preferably sit in different environments without sharing the same local network. If the technical information is not supplied, the name is registered but not delegated: it stays in Reserved status and the address does not work.
