.su Domain: Russia's Extension in Use Since 1990
.su is a country code top-level domain entered into the root zone on 19 September 1990, three and a half years earlier than Russia's own .ru. The zone is administered by ROSNIIROS, based in Moscow, which marked the extension's 35th anniversary in September 2025. Registration is governed by «Правила регистрации доменных имен в домене .SU»: the text took effect on 1 August 2020, and the version amended by a decision of 3 April 2026 has applied since 6 April 2026.
This is a working namespace rather than a closed archive. The registry states on its own site that the zone holds more than 112,000 domain names and that around 78% of them are actively used. The rules anticipate applicants from abroad: for a foreign company that is not a taxpayer in Russia, its home tax identifier or trade register number is accepted. The country's national zone is .ru, while .com.ru is a separate commercial zone inside .RU.
A new condition is on the calendar: from 1 September 2026, registration and renewal in the national zones, .su included, depend on the registrant confirming their identity with a verified account on Gosuslugi (ЕСИА). The technical operator of the registries has stated that the requirement covers new and existing holders alike and that foreign individuals can create that account and complete the check. If you are after a short, historic address, try your candidate with domain search.

.su Domain Lifecycle
What happens day by day after it expires
Day 0 is the domain's expiry dateIn short: for .su the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .su, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.
Domain Is Available (Available)
A .su address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.
Domain Is Active (Active Period)
Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.
Domain Is Available Again
Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .su Domains
The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.
-
Yes. The zone was never closed; registration continues through the registrars accredited by ROSNIIROS. The registry states on its own site that the zone holds more than 112,000 domain names and that around 78% of them are actively used (accessed August 2026). The framework runs on rules that took effect on 1 August 2020 and were last amended on 6 April 2026. If you are looking for an available name, try your candidate with domain search.
-
The rules impose no nationality or residency condition; on the contrary, a foreign applicant is expressly contemplated. In listing the data to be held in the registry, they state that for a foreign company that is not a taxpayer in Russia, its home tax identifier or trade register number is accepted. What does apply from 1 September 2026 is identity verification through Gosuslugi (ЕСИА); the technical operator has said foreign individuals can create that account. Plan your timing around this step.
-
According to the announcement by the technical operator of the registries, once the new requirements take effect, registering a name in the national zones or extending an existing one will be possible only after identity is confirmed with a verified account on Gosuslugi — the announcement names .ru, .рф and .su together. The requirement covers new and existing holders, individuals and companies, and non-residents of Russia. If you already hold a .su address, complete the check before your renewal date rather than on it.

Under clause 3.1.1 the name must be at least two and at most 63 characters, must begin and end with a letter or a digit, and may contain only letters, digits and hyphens; the Punycode form must also stay within 63 characters. One rule is specific to this zone: the permitted characters are defined in tables published by the registry, and a single domain name may use characters from only one of those tables — scripts cannot be mixed within one name.
-
The registry states on its site that the zone supports internationalised domain names in both Latin and Cyrillic script, and its October 2025 announcement describes support extended to the languages of the BRICS countries. The practical catch is the no-mixing rule: every character you use must come from a single character table published by the registry. An application that combines Latin and Cyrillic letters in one name will fail on that condition.
-
Under clause 4.1 the registration term is one year and may be renewed an unlimited number of times, each renewal adding a year from the previous expiry. When the term ends, delegation stops and the address goes off the air. A 30-day preferential renewal period then begins in which only the previous holder may renew, and the registrar must send reminders 5–10 and 20–25 days after expiry. If that period passes without renewal, the registration is cancelled.
-
On 24 April 2026 the registry announced that transfers between registrars in the .SU zone now run on an AuthInfo code, so the zone uses the same standard mechanism as the .ru side. Changing the holder of the name is a separate operation: clause 6 of the rules allows the right of administration to be transferred to another person during the registration term by written application. You can start the steps from the domain transfer page.
-
They are two separate top-level domains run by two separate organisations. .ru was entered into the root zone on 7 April 1994 and is governed by the Coordination Center. .su was entered on 19 September 1990 and its registry is ROSNIIROS. In short, .su is the older zone and .ru the larger one. On registration term, preferential renewal and registrant data, the two rulebooks are closely aligned.
