WHAT IS A .COM.SE DOMAIN

.com.se Domain: An Alternative Route to a Swedish Address

.com.se is a third-level address form beneath Sweden's country extension .se, pairing a commercial «com» prefix with a Swedish identity. Its operator, however, is not Sweden's national registry: com.se is a name created in the .se register on 9 October 2013, and the registrations beneath it are held by CentralNic Ltd. Clause 3.2.6 of the .se registration terms recognises this arrangement explicitly — subdomains are administered by the holder of the name in question.

The practical difference shows up in eligibility. To take .se directly you must be identifiable in an official register and must not shield your identity; under .com.se the operator's terms ask for a single representation — that you have the right to use the name forming the prefix. No nationality, residency or documentary requirement applies. The registration term is stated plainly too: a whole number of years between one and ten, extendable by renewal.

Technically the zone is sound: com.se carries its own DNSSEC records inside the .se zone, making it a signed delegation. Disputes run under the CDRP — CentralNic's policy covering twenty zones lists com.se by name. The test mirrors UDRP's three elements, but a free mediation stage with the operator comes first, after which the National Arbitration Forum administers the case. Check the name you want on the domain name search page.

This address depends on one upstream registration: com.se exists as a single record inside the .se register, and every address beneath it depends on that record being maintained. It has been renewed without interruption since 2013 and the zone is signed, so nothing technical is amiss today — but there is one layer more than under .se directly: there your counterparty is the national registry, here the holder of com.se and the operator CentralNic sit in between. If this will be the address your brand is tied to for years, weigh .se itself; if you want a short, commercial-sounding Swedish address, .com.se does the job.

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: for .com.se the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .com.se, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .com.se address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 30

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

Day 30 – 35

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 35

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.se Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Yes. The operator's terms ask for no nationality, residency or Swedish connection; the only requirement is that you represent that you have the right to use the name forming the prefix. That makes the extension more accessible than .se itself, where you must at least be identifiable in an official register and must not shield your identity. No Swedish company, address, representative or trustee service is involved.

  • None. The operator's terms provide for no paperwork, register extract or identity document at the point of application; registration proceeds on your representation. This is the most concrete practical difference from .se. The flip side is that the accuracy of that representation is your responsibility: you are undertaking that you may use the name and that registering it infringes no third-party right.

  • The operator's terms state it plainly: «The initial period of registration of the domain name is a whole number of years between one year and ten years.» Renewals extend it by further years on payment of the renewal fee. This is a point where the extension is clearer than its parent zone: the .se registry publishes no registration period options at all, whereas for .com.se the range is defined in a single sentence of the rulebook.

  • Both the counterparty and the conditions change. Under .se the record sits with Sweden's national registry, the rules rest on an act of parliament, and disputes run through the registry's own procedure. Under .com.se the holder of the com.se name and the operator CentralNic sit in between; clause 3.2.6 of the .se terms states that subdomains are administered by the holder of the name in question. Eligibility is looser at .com.se, while national identity is stronger directly under .se.

  • Yes. A measurement on 12 August 2026 showed that com.se carries its own DS records inside the .se zone and that queries return authenticated (AD) answers — so com.se is a signed delegation and the DNSSEC chain runs unbroken from the root. A sub-zone carrying its own DS record is also independent technical evidence that it is a genuine registry zone rather than a plain hostname.

  • Under the CDRP, the CentralNic Dispute Resolution Policy, which covers twenty of the operator's zones and names .com.se explicitly. A complainant must establish UDRP's familiar three elements: identity or confusing similarity to a trademark, absence of rights or legitimate interests on the holder's side, and bad faith. Two differences apply: a free mediation stage with the operator comes first, and unresolved matters are then administered by the National Arbitration Forum.
