.com.vn Domain: Vietnam's Commercial Second-Level Space
.com.vn is the commercial namespace beneath .vn, the country code extension of Vietnam, and it is run by the same state registry: Trung tâm Internet Việt Nam, known as VNNIC, which sits under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The rules are legislation; the text in force is the ministerial circular Thông tư 48/2025/TT-BKHCN, effective 10 February 2026. The parent zone .vn entered the root on 14 April 1994; the registry publishes no separate opening date for com.vn, so no date is claimed for it here. Registration goes through accredited registrars only.
.com.vn is a shared second-level name allocated to nobody: registration happens at the third level beneath it, and the rules describe that space as suited to trade and services. That wording is guidance, not a gate — in restricted extensions the same text uses an «only these may register» formula, and com.vn does not carry it. Agencies, organisations, enterprises and private individuals register on identical terms, and an ordinary application asks for no trade register extract. Foreign applicants face no local presence requirement either. If you want the second level directly, .vn is a separate registration and neither level blocks the other.
Two points matter for your order. The first is short names: one- and two-character names are delegated and working on the com.vn side, and the state auction that governs the second level of .vn does not reach this space, so a short name that is free can be ordered normally. The second is expiry: the redemption chain of generic extensions does not exist here. After the term ends the name stays switched off but renewable for thirty days, then enters withdrawal processing and the holder can no longer renew it. Check whether your name is free on the domain name search page.

.com.vn Domain Lifecycle
What happens day by day after it expires
Day 0 is the domain's expiry dateIn short: for .com.vn the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .com.vn, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.
Domain Is Available (Available)
A .com.vn address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.
Domain Is Active (Active Period)
Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.
Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)
If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.
Domain Is Available Again
Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.vn Domains
The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.
-
No. The rules define com.vn as open to «agencies, organisations, enterprises and individuals» and describe the space as suited to trade and services — but «suited» is guidance, not a gate. For restricted extensions the same text uses an «only these may register» formula, and com.vn does not carry it. An ordinary application asks for no trade register extract and no proof of activity; the declaration form is enough, with a digital signature or national e-identity check when you file online. Foreign applicants face no local presence rule either: an address in Vietnam means a domestic registrar, while an address abroad allows domestic and foreign registrars alike.
-
From one year upwards. The registry states that a name must be maintained for at least 1 year after registration; the upper end follows your own needs, and its English country-code page gives the range as 1 to 50 years. On renewal the new expiry runs from the current expiry date rather than the payment date, so renewing early costs nothing and you may renew before the term ends. Maintenance fees already paid are not refunded. For multi-year renewals the registry advises verifying in its lookup how many years were really processed; fewer years than ordered is a real outage risk for a commercial site.
-
The rules start at one character, and on the com.vn side that can be measured directly: on 15 August 2026 single-character com.vn names were delegated with working name servers, and so were two-character names. Some short control names came back unregistered, which shows the measurement discriminates rather than reporting everything as taken. The state auction that applies to the second level of .vn does not reach this space either — every auction list consists of two-character second-level names. So a free short com.vn name can be ordered normally, and the fee schedule sets no length tiers at the third level.
-
The registry and the legislation are the same; level and positioning differ. .com.vn is a shared second-level name allocated to nobody, and you register at the third level beneath it, in a space the rules describe as suited to trade and services. .vn is registered directly at the second level and asks for no particular capacity. The two levels are independent registrations: the holder of example.com.vn cannot stop example.vn going elsewhere, and the reverse holds too. Technically com.vn is a separate delegation carrying its own zone signature, though it is served on the same registry infrastructure and name servers.

The thirty days after expiry are yours. The name is switched off during that window — site and email stop — but you can pay the renewal and recover it; once the payment is processed the name works again within about half an hour, with up to a day for fully stable operation. At the end of the thirtieth day it moves into withdrawal processing and the holder can no longer renew. Release is random and automatic, and the procedure caps that moment at fifteen days from the end of the renewal period. Because this zone has no redemption period, a delay cannot be made good afterwards.
-
For a change of registrar your current provider unlocks the name and issues the authorisation code; you hand it to the new provider and the move completes within 5 working days at most. The old provider cannot obstruct you once your obligations are met and must give reasons in writing for any refusal. Transfer is closed in five situations: within 60 days of a new registration, in the last 30 days before expiry, during an infringement case, while the name is suspended, and while a dispute is pending. A change of holder is a separate procedure concluded within 10 days, and the new holder inherits the remaining maintenance term. Verify the result on the whois search page and start on the domain transfer page.

Yes. The rules define Vietnamese-script names not as a separate zone but for «all levels» of the national extension, and the third level beneath com.vn is included. The name enters the zone file in punycode form, and the 63-character ceiling applies to that converted ASCII string. Measurement confirms it: a Vietnamese-script com.vn name is delegated in production, and the same root is separately registered under .vn as well. In practice you can hold a Vietnamese brand in its accented and unaccented spellings and point both at the same site.

Not by the UDRP but under Vietnamese law. The basis is the Luật Viễn thông 2023 telecommunications act and decree Nghị định 147/2024/NĐ-CP. The registry states its own lack of competence plainly: VNNIC does not resolve disputes, it only applies a decision of the competent authority, a court judgment, an arbitral award or a legally valid settlement record. Three routes exist: conciliation, commercial arbitration and the people's court. In a commercial namespace the sharpest warning is this — the registry says .vn names fall outside the Intellectual Property Law and that a trademark alone creates no protection over a domain; protection starts with registering the name first.
