The relevant article says that liberal professionals, sole traders, trademark applicants or holders and all other natural or legal persons may register names under .gw regardless of their nationality or the location of their registered office. There is no requirement of residence, a company or a representative in Guinea-Bissau. A name is allocated to the first applicant who satisfies the conditions.

Name choice is not free; the regulation ties the name to the type of applicant. For legal persons the name must coincide with the duly registered company name or denomination; for sole traders with the name, firm or trading name; for liberal professionals it must fully coincide with the professional name. Trademark holders have a separate route: word marks registered in your favour are accepted, and for international registrations the mark must extend to Guinea-Bissau. Abbreviations and acronyms of those names are also accepted.

Not at registration. The regulation settles this in two paragraphs: registration does not require supporting documents unless ARN asks for them, and where they are asked for a simple copy is sufficient proof; ARN may at any time request certified copies. A separate legal review takes place after registration, and if ARN considers it necessary it asks for the documents by e-mail or fax within seven days. Non-compliance, or insufficient or incorrect data, leads to immediate removal of the name.

The regulation sets an unusual term structure: a domain name is registered for an initial period of two years, renewable for equal periods. The minimum unit is therefore two years rather than one. The term starts on the date of registration, and once payment and — where applicable — server configuration have been verified, the name is activated within a maximum of seven business days. A name registered on 29 February expires at the end of 28 February in non-leap years.

There is no separate redemption period, which makes tracking important. The registry sends an e-mail warning thirty days before the expiry date and points to the renewal mechanism; once triggered, a new invoice is issued for an equal period and must be paid within thirty days. If reactivation does not happen within that window the name becomes available for registration again. Removal gives no right to any refund, compensation or indemnity.

In addition, a registered name cannot be renamed; a new name means removing the old one and applying again.

The registry points to an arbitration route. Its own information page states that if the name you want is already registered by someone else and you are the holder of a prior right with legitimate grounds to consider that a conflict exists over that name, you may use the arbitration process.
