The Regolamento sets a single eligibility test: registration is open to anyone holding citizenship, residence or a registered office in a European Economic Area country, the Vatican City State, San Marino, Switzerland or the United Kingdom. No distinction is drawn between individuals and legal persons; the same rule applies to both. The test is not presence in Italy — a company incorporated in Germany or a person resident in Switzerland meets it just as well. Applicants outside that map cannot register at the second level.

The Regolamento does not ask for an Italian address; it asks for a link to the European Economic Area, the Vatican City State, San Marino, Switzerland or the United Kingdom — citizenship, residence or a registered office. The United Kingdom was added to that list by version 8.0, that is on 30 May 2022, and it is the only substantive change made after Brexit. Without a link to any of those countries the application stops at the eligibility stage.

The Regolamento registers names for one year and renews them automatically at each expiry for as long as the conditions are still met. You therefore do not need to send a separate renewal instruction every year to keep the name. Automatic renewal is skipped only where a deletion or revocation took place before the expiry date or the related autoRenewPeriod. A deletion is submitted by the registrar, during the name's validity or during autoRenewPeriod, at the registrant's express request.

Names directly under .it must be at least three characters long; each label may run to 63 characters and the whole name to 255. On the ASCII side the digits 0 to 9, the letters a to z and the hyphen are allowed; non-ASCII characters come from the character sets listed in the Registry's «Linee Guida tecniche», so accented names are possible. No label may begin or end with a hyphen, and no label may carry the string «xn--» in its first four characters, which is reserved for IDN encoding.

Allocation rests on the first come first served principle: the date and time of registration are those at which a syntactically and semantically correct request enters the registry database. The Regolamento expressly rules out reservation — «un nome a dominio non è prenotabile» — so there is no way to hold a name while you make up your mind. The same article records that the Registry repudiates systematic hoarding and cybersquatting. Operations run in real time over EPP.

Disputes can be settled out of court, through reassignment proceedings run by the Dispute Resolution Service Providers accredited by the Registry. The text in force is version 2.2 (2025) of the dispute regulation, together with version 3.3 of the accompanying legal guidelines. The Registry also operates a separate objection procedure: a recorded objection places constraints on operations affecting the name, and the name's administrative position stays suspended until the matter is resolved.

The Regolamento defines three groups. The first covers names corresponding to Italy — it.it, italia.it, italy.it and similar forms — reserved for Italian institutional bodies. The second covers the historic gTLD labels: com, edu, gov, int, mil, net and org. The third is the list in Appendix D of names assignable to no one outside the Registry, such as www.it, mail.it, whois.it and nic-it.it. None of these may be registered either directly under .it or beneath the geographic structure.

Both sit under the same registry and the same Regolamento, but at different points of the tree. .it sits directly under the country extension. .co.it belongs to the Regolamento's organisational-geographic structure and corresponds to the province of Como, so it reads as a local geographic suffix rather than a commercial «company» one. Eligibility, term and dispute procedure are identical for both.
