It is a geographic marker, not a commercial abbreviation. The Registro .it rulebook, the Regolamento, lists the domain forms of the Italian provinces in its appendices, and that list contains the line «Como.it CO.it». So co.it corresponds to the province of Como in Lombardy and forms part of Italy's organisational-geographic name structure. Reading the suffix as «company» is a common misunderstanding: Italy has no separate second-level zone for commercial names, and companies register directly under .it.
