WHAT IS A .COM.JO DOMAIN

com.jo Domain: Jordan's Commercial Registration Zone

com.jo is the zone of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan reserved for commercial applicants, and it has no separate operator: it too is run by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship (MoDEE). On its English page the ministry states that it is the registry and the registrar for names under .jo at both the first and second level, so registration here also runs directly with the ministry, and an accredited-registrar contract is not possible under the instructions currently in force.

The zone table opens com.jo, under the heading «commercial», to four applicant types, each named explicitly: local companies of every kind and foreign companies operating in the Kingdom, foreign companies not operating in the Kingdom, sole proprietorships, and freelance professionals. A company abroad therefore does not need a branch or a tax registration in Jordan; the second category exists precisely for that case and asks for a different set of documents in return.

For an application from abroad the primary documents are two: a global trademark certificate issued by an international trademark body, and an authorisation on company letterhead, signed by the authorised signatory and stamped, empowering someone to manage the company's domains in the Kingdom. The registry adds one further condition: the authorised person must be located in the Kingdom and hold a local mobile number. Check your candidate on the domain name search page.

The detail that decides a foreign application: Issuing an authorisation is not enough on its own. The registry additionally requires that the person authorised as account officer on its site be physically located in the Kingdom and hold a local mobile number. If the authorisation runs through an intellectual property office, that office must supply a certified power of attorney bearing the stamp of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or of a Jordanian diplomatic mission abroad. These two details are where applications most often stall. View required documents →

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .com.jo address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

1 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.jo Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Yes. The registry's zone table opens com.jo to four applicant types, and one of them is «foreign companies not operating in the Kingdom». You do not need a branch, a partnership or a tax registration. What is asked in return is a different document set: a global trademark certificate matching the name to be registered, and a signed and stamped authorisation empowering someone to manage the company's domains in the Kingdom.

  • Yes, and this detail is missed in most applications. The registry separately requires that the person authorised as account officer on its site be located in the Kingdom and hold a local mobile number. If the authorisation is granted through an intellectual property office, that office must supply a certified power of attorney bearing the stamp of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs or of a Jordanian diplomatic mission abroad.

  • It depends where you are registered. For local and foreign companies operating in the Kingdom, the primary document is the company registration certificate from the Companies Control Department or the Free Zones and Development Corporation. For companies not operating in the Kingdom, the document list never mentions a trade register record at all: the primary document required is a global trademark registration. Plan accordingly if you are applying from abroad.

  • As a rule, no. The registry writes that the «domain name user» changes in only two situations: when the name rests on a trademark or trade name and ownership of that right is evidenced by documents, and when an entity changes its name while its national number stays the same. For an older registration, moving the name to another party requires a decision of the competent court. There is no accredited-registrar system either, so no registrar transfer exists.

  • The registry gives one timing commitment: once every document has arrived and nothing conflicts with the instructions, preliminary approval is issued within at most one official working day. A financial claim carrying the domain name and a reference number is then emailed to the account officer. A name whose documents are incomplete is held in the system for 30 days and then automatically suspended; after that period you must contact the team to register it again.

  • The Registration Policy makes the first ground for cutting service this: the renewal fee not being paid within 30 days of the subscription's expiry. The registry backs the process with two reminders — a monthly financial claim for names expiring the following month, and a second reminder in the middle of that month. A disconnected name can be recovered if it is still free, the registrant entity is still active and the accumulated dues are paid.

  • Within a time limit, yes. If the name is within 30 days of final approval, you may file an electronic objection through your own account on the site, with sufficient reasoning and supporting documents; the team reviews it and responds within ten official working days. Past that window, changing the user requires a decision of the competent court. The ministry states it is not a party to domain disputes, while courts may request registration data without consent.

  • Yes. For second-level .jo the registry's zone table has a single line: «all of the above». So every applicant eligible for com.jo may also apply directly under .jo, under the same document regime. The reverse does not hold: individuals, associations and schools are steered to their own zones rather than com.jo. The rule that the zone must match the nature of the business is what decides here.
