WHAT IS A .KITCHEN DOMAIN

The .kitchen Domain: Open to Every Sense of the Word

.kitchen entered the root zone on 13 November 2013 under an ICANN registry agreement dated 20 September 2013, and the contracting party today is Binky Moon, LLC. The ending stays open to the full range of trades the word covers. The nTLDstats page accessed on 12 August 2026 shows 9,945 registrations, of which 7,485 appear in the zone file.

Fitters, cabinet and worktop makers, restaurant kitchens, cookery workshops, recipe publishers and shops selling utensils all share the zone. No eligibility condition applies and no paperwork is requested. Try candidates through a .kitchen domain search, and compare the .cooking page, which leans towards preparing food.

No single trade owns this word, and the contract says so

In Specification 11 §4(a) of its ICANN agreement the operator recorded that it treats this string as a generic or dictionary term and will run the zone inclusively. The text forbids two things outright: setting eligibility limits based on identity, and reserving names for those whose work matches only the most common usage of the term. In practice a studio designing home kitchens, a firm installing industrial catering lines and a writer publishing recipes all apply with equal standing. The distinction is drawn by the stem, not the ending, so put the word that describes your trade into the stem.

.kitchen Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .kitchen domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .kitchen, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .kitchen address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .kitchen domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $11.12 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .kitchen returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .kitchen Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. The operator may not set eligibility limits based on identity.

The agreement treats the string as a dictionary term and requires the zone to be run inclusively, so a fitter, a recipe writer and a utensil retailer all apply with equal standing. No document is requested and no trade-body membership is checked. Visitors, though, expect a page about kitchens when they see the address, so choose a stem that describes what you actually do.

  • The stem draws that line, not the ending, because the ending sits equally close to both.

For commercial work, put a word naming the sector into the stem; for domestic design, a city name or a design cue separates you more clearly. Search results then reveal your trade from the address alone. To try several patterns at once, use the bulk domain name search.

  • They split the room from the activity: one names the kitchen itself, the other names the act of preparing food.

If you install kitchens, build cabinets or sell worktops and utensils, the ending that names the room reads more accurately. If you publish recipes, run classes or explain technique, the ending that names the activity fits better. The two zones may sit with different operators, so check each set of rules separately.

  • Of 9,945 registrations, 7,485 sit in the zone file according to the nTLDstats page accessed on 12 August 2026, roughly 75 percent.

Three registered names in four are attached to a site, which shows the zone is not dominated by parking. The rule that follows: short single-word stems can be treated as largely exhausted, and two-word descriptive patterns are the more productive place to look.

  • It is worth it when you run branches or distinct product lines.

A separate address lets you measure a showroom or dealer page independently of the main site. Each address is also separate upkeep, though: more certificates, more content to refresh, more renewal dates to watch. Unless you will manage more than two or three, one strong address with sub-pages usually creates less work. Track the registration status through whois search.
