WHAT IS A .LV DOMAIN

.lv Domain: Latvia's Official Country Extension

.lv is the country code extension of Latvia, entered in the root zone on 12 April 1993. Its registry is neither a company nor a ministry but the Network Solutions Department of the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Latvia (NIC.LV, Riga). The governing text is the Policy for acquisition of the right to use domain names, dated 1 July 2009, whose latest amendment took effect on 1 September 2023; the registry must publish changes at least a month before they apply and send them to the Ministry of Transport for review.

Registration from abroad is expressly allowed: the policy lists eligible holders as companies registered in Latvia, state and municipal authorities, foundations and unions, natural persons aged 18 or over, and organisations registered outside Latvia. No residency, local agent or document is required. A name is built from Latin letters, digits and hyphens and runs from 2 to 63 characters. Since March 2004 Latvian letters with diacritics can also be registered, and the zone has been DNSSEC-signed since 2012.

The right to use a name can be taken for one to five years, and the policy is explicit that a domain is not an object of ownership: what you acquire is a right of use under contract. Applications are processed in the order received and reviewed within one calendar day, while data changes made through the registry's system take effect within thirty minutes. For a commercial signal, .com.lv is open, and community projects can use .org.lv. Check your shortlist on the domain name search page.

Late payment moves fast: seven days, then thirty: If payment is late, the registry emails a reminder to every contact on the record. Where payment does not arrive within seven days of that reminder, the name's technical data are suspended — the website and email stop working. A thirty-day hold period then runs, and if the cause is cleared within it the right to use the name is restored. At the end of the thirtieth day the name is deleted and becomes freely available again; during the hold period nobody else can register it.

Domain lifecycle

The stages in order, from registration to release
Available Before registration
Active 1 - 5 years
Redemption 30 days
Pending delete 30 days
Available Open again

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .lv address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 5 years

Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

30 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

30 days

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .lv Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. When the policy lists who may hold a name, it expressly includes companies and organisations registered outside Latvia, alongside natural persons aged 18 or over. No residency, local agent or document is required. The only exceptions sit in the subdomains: .com.lv is open to everyone, while .id.lv is reserved for residents of Latvia and .edu.lv for accredited educational institutions.

  • The policy grants the right to use a name for a period of not less than one year and not more than five, so you can choose anything in that range and renew at the end. Amendments to the policy do not shorten a period you have already paid for. The practical benefit of a longer term is fewer renewal reminders to track — and that matters here, because a missed payment starts a suspension clock within seven days.

  • Between 2 and 63 characters. The lower limit was confirmed by measurement: asking the registry's lookup service for a single-character name returns an invalid query error, so such a name is rejected at the syntax level, whereas two-character names appear either registered or free. A hyphen may not begin or end the name. In addition, a natural person's full name may only be registered by the person who bears it.

  • Yes. Since 1 March 2004 the registry has accepted names containing Latvian letters with diacritics (ā, ē, ī, ū, ō, ķ, ļ, ņ, ŗ, ģ, š, č, ž), which it calls Latvian domain names. In technical records and invoices the name appears in Punycode form with an xn-- prefix. Bear in mind that visitors abroad may not have those characters on their keyboard; many organisations register the Latvian spelling alongside a plain ASCII variant.

  • The registry first emails a reminder to every contact on the record. If payment does not arrive within seven days of that reminder, the technical data of the name are suspended and the website and email stop. A thirty-day hold period then runs: pay within it and the right to use the name is restored; miss it and the name is deleted and becomes freely available again. Nobody else can register the name during the hold period.

  • Names of natural persons are not published. A lookup shows the status of the name, the name servers, the registrar and, for corporate holders, the organisation's name, address and registration number, with contact routed through the registry's own web form. Anything further is released only on a written request that states a legitimate reason and its legal basis. You can inspect a record on the whois search page.

  • The right to use a name can be transferred to another person on the holder's signed written request; if you use a registrar, the request goes to them. The registry also implements transfers ordered through alternative dispute resolution or by a court. Inheritance has its own clause: if a natural person holding a name dies, the heirs may take it over by notifying the registry and assuming payment, and payments made before the estate is settled give no heir priority over another.

  • Two: the Latvian courts or arbitration, and the registry's alternative dispute resolution procedure. By completing the registration application you accept that procedure, and it also covers subdomains such as .com.lv and .org.lv. While a case runs, the registry applies a dispute lock that blocks transfers. If the name expires mid-case, it is not deleted: the registration application is offered to the complainant instead.
