WHAT IS A .PS DOMAIN

.ps Domain Registration: Palestine's Official Country Code

.ps is the country code top-level domain of Palestine, and names can be registered directly at the second level. In the root zone record the manager is the Government Computer Center of the Ministry of Telecommunications & Information Technology in Ramallah; the zone is operated in practice by the Palestinian National Internet Naming Authority, PNINA, and registrations run only through its certified registrars. The extension entered the root on 22 March 2000 and registration traffic began in 2004: the oldest measured names include mail.ps from 27 January 2004 and paltel.ps from 12 March 2004.

Registration is open to everyone. The registry says so in one sentence of its own guide: anyone, Palestinians and non-Palestinians, from businesses to organisations to individuals, can register a .ps domain name. No residency, no local contact and no documents are asked for, and the registry's own 2017 breakdown puts 78.1 per cent of holders in Palestine and 21.9 per cent abroad. The gap between the direct form and its siblings is measurable too: the same breakdown counted 6,907 names directly under .ps against 545 for .com.ps, .org.ps and .net.ps combined.

For anyone hunting a short label the measurement is surprising. On 15 August 2026 the single-letter f.ps, l.ps, v.ps, x.ps and z.ps were registered, while the remaining twenty-one letters and all ten digits came back free with no reservation notice attached. The registry rulebook sets the minimum length at one character, so two- and three-letter names are an ordinary option here rather than an exception. Check whether the label you have in mind is free on the domain name search page and start the registration from there.

The sovereignty clause in the rulebook: PNINA's registration policy treats domain names under .ps, and the content they point to, as virtual extensions of Palestinian sovereignty, with Palestinian law applicable to them. The same section reserves exclusive jurisdiction over disputes to the Palestinian courts. This rule does not depend on where the holder lives: register the name from abroad and both the name and whatever you publish on it still fall inside that framework. In practice it means planning your site content so that it does not run against that law.

Domain lifecycle

The stages in order, from registration to release
Available Before registration
Active 1 - 10 years
Redemption 1 days
Pending delete 1 days
Available Open again

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .ps address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

1 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

1 days

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .ps Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. The registry's registration policy states that names under .ps are open to any entity inside and outside Palestine, and it asks for no residency, no local contact and no documents. The registry's own guide puts it even more plainly: anyone, Palestinians and non-Palestinians, from businesses to organisations to individuals, can register a .ps domain name. Measurement confirms it — on 15 August 2026 the zone held names registered in the United States, Ireland, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Switzerland and China. The only real condition is that your application data is accurate and complete; incorrect information is grounds for rejection.

  • One character. The registry rulebook describes the name format directly: a minimum of one and a maximum of sixty-three alphanumeric characters, drawn from the sets a–z and 0–9, with the hyphen as the only special character and never in first or last position. Measurement confirms it: on 15 August 2026 all twenty-six letters and all ten digits were queried one by one, f.ps, l.ps, v.ps, x.ps and z.ps came back registered, and the remaining thirty-one came back free. Two-character go.ps, ai.ps and ps.ps are registered too, so a short label is a genuine option here.

  • On the expiry date the name enters a thirty-day holding period. The registry is explicit about what that means: the name stays reserved for those thirty days but is not written into the zone file, so the website stops loading and any e-mail attached to the domain stops working. To renew it you first have to restore the name through your registrar, and a separate reactivation fee applies. The chain was measured: on 15 August 2026 a .ps name that had expired five days earlier showed a redemption end date exactly thirty days after expiry. Renewing before the expiry date therefore makes a concrete difference.

  • On paper there is none: both are namespaces of the same registry, under the same registration policy, the same dispute procedure and the same expiry chain. The difference shows up in measurement. The registry's 2017 breakdown counted 6,907 names directly under .ps against 545 for .com.ps, .org.ps and .net.ps combined. Usage separates them as well: the country's telecom operator, bank, stock exchange, university and ministry names all sit on the direct form. In practice .ps offers recognition while .com.ps offers availability.

  • The registry's lookup server is whois.registry.ps, it answers on port 43 and it recognises .ps together with its sub-namespaces. The response carries the creation date, the last update, the expiry date, the registrar and its country, the status codes, the name servers, and the name, address, telephone and e-mail of the registrant plus the administrative, technical and billing contacts. The registry offers no privacy service and says so directly: contact information is publicly available. There is no separate RDAP service for the zone. You can run the query from the whois search page.

  • A change of registrar works in both directions. The rulebook recognises two routes: either the gaining registrar starts the request and the holder confirms within seven days of the registry's notification, or the holder starts it and the gaining registrar confirms within seven days. Miss the window and the request lapses. A change of owner is a separate matter: the rulebook treats the delegation as personal and does not allow the name to be sold on its own, though it may pass together with the business assets of the holder. Start the process for a name you are taking over from the domain transfer page.
