Identity verification. According to the Technical Centre's announcement, from 1 September 2026 verification through the state «Gosuslugi» portal becomes mandatory for domain administrators in the .ru, .рф and .su zones; the basis is Federal Law No. 569-FZ of 29 December 2025. The announcement states the consequence plainly: after that date, registering a name or renewing an existing one will only be possible after identity confirmation with a verified account. Foreign nationals can also create an account on the portal and complete the verification.

For one year only. The rules put it in a single sentence: «the registration term of a domain name is one year.» The next clause says renewal may be taken an unlimited number of times, but each renewal extends the term by one year from the previous end date. So there is no two-, five- or ten-year option in .рф. A renewal request may be filed no earlier than 60 days before expiry, and the registrar must send an email reminder 50 to 60 days before that date.

No. The rules permit only letters of the Russian and other national alphabets of the Russian Federation, digits and the hyphen in the body of a name; the permitted symbols are enumerated in a separate appendix to the rules. A name must be at least two characters, begin and end with a letter or digit, and keep its Punycode form within 63 characters; hyphens may not appear in the third and fourth positions at once. The site goes dark on the expiry day. The rules are explicit: delegation established at the holder's request ends when the registration term expires — there is no extra period of operation. A 30-day preferential renewal period then runs, during which the right to renew stays with the former holder; the registrar must send reminders 5 to 10 and 20 to 25 days after expiry. If the name is not renewed by the end of that period, the registration is cancelled. The registrar is not responsible for completing a request filed on the last working day.

The rules list three channels. First: a written decision by the head of a body carrying out operational search activity, or a reasoned demand from Roskomnadzor — the latter applying where the name was registered using third parties' personal data without consent, or where the resource carries information that must be restricted under Law 149-FZ. Second: the holder's details turning out to be inaccurate, or the requested confirmation not being supplied in time. Third: a reasoned report from a competent organisation about phishing, malware or botnet control, or child abuse material.

It is a list of strings closed to registration, maintained by the Coordination Center. A string enters the list on four grounds: containing words contrary to the public interest, the principles of humanity and morality; having been used to address a site whose access was permanently restricted under Law 149-FZ; a report from a competent organisation that the string was generated automatically to distribute malware; or being reserved in advance for state needs. Whether a string is on the list is publicly visible through WHOIS.

Two stand out. The first is rarely seen elsewhere in our scope: a delegation request is executed only if the registrar has verified that the holder can be reached on the SMS-capable telephone number held in the registry. The second is standard: for the name to work it needs at least two name servers, which must have a reliable connection and operate around the clock. The zone is signed with DNSSEC — a measurement on 14 August 2026 found DS records in the root and DNSKEY records in the zone.
