You do not have to be established there, but it is not entirely unrestricted either. The Plan Nacional says the name may be obtained by «any natural or legal person with interests in or links to Spain». The registry defines that link through three situations: being established in Spain, wanting to direct services wholly or partly at the Spanish market, or offering information, services and products connected to Spain culturally, historically or socially. The second covers overseas businesses planning to sell into Spain. The numbers bear it out: in July 2026 there were 48,740 registrations from the USA and 47,446 from Germany.

The options are discrete and there is nothing in between. The registry's own renewal page states that you may renew your name for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 years. So 6, 7, 8 and 9 years cannot be selected; the only step beyond five years is straight to ten. Renewal can be done at any point in the year without waiting for the expiry date; the single condition is that the term in force must not exceed ten years.

Yes. When the Plan Nacional lists the permitted characters it expressly includes multilingual ones: á, à, é, è, í, ï, ó, ò, ú, ü, ñ, ç and the Catalan geminated l·l. To these are added the letters a-z of the Spanish alphabet, the digits 0-9 and the hyphen, which may be neither the first nor the last character; case is not distinguished. Because the list covers not only Castilian but the country's other co-official languages, Catalan spellings can be built too.

Anyone who can show a legitimate interest may start the cancellation procedure. The six published grounds are: no interests in or links to Spain; a name composed only of surnames, or of given names and surnames, whose holder has no direct connection to it; false or incorrect data in the record whose accuracy cannot be proven; failure to observe the technical rules; breach of the syntax rules; and a name declared to be of general interest by decision of the President of Red.es. The applicant must prove both the ground and their interest, and the holder is given a right of reply.

Not through UDRP but through the registry's own out-of-court procedure, approved on 7 November 2005. The entry threshold is Prior Rights, and they are enumerated: entity names validly registered in Spain, designations of origin, trade names, registered trademarks or other industrial property rights protected in Spain; well-known civil names or pseudonyms that identify someone professionally; and the official names of Spanish public administrations. The expert issues a reasoned decision within two months on average and may not go beyond what was requested.

Lookups run through the registry's web interface. In a measurement on 14 August 2026, every query sent to the port 43 WHOIS endpoint named in the IANA record went unanswered, and no RDAP service for .es could be found registered in the IANA bootstrap. So standard command-line tools may not work as expected against .es. You can inspect existing records for other extensions on the whois search screen.

The registry, the rule set and the dispute procedure are the same for both; the difference is level and density. .es sits directly at the second level, while .com.es is a zone inside it. The registry's July 2026 report shows the scale plainly: 2,126,526 names sit directly under .es against 83,763 in .com.es. So .es is far fuller, and the odds of finding a short name are noticeably better in .com.es. Being a third-level zone, it also allows shorter names.
