Tonga, which is a small island economy, is located in a geography which is very open to the effects of seasonal and external factors. The Tonga economy is heavily dependent on the revenues and foreign aid provided by the Tongalians living in countries such as the USA, New Zealand and Australia.
Economic activities in the country are limited to services, tourism and agriculture. 70% of the population makes a living from agriculture. In Tonga, the tourism sector is the most important source of foreign currency after foreign workers' remittances.
The Tonga Government emphasizes the need for the private sector to develop, encourages investments, and tries to pay more attention to the health and education sector.
Increasing unemployment rate, inflation, increasing public services expenditures and high external debts in the young population are among the most important problems facing the Tonga Government.
