WHAT IS A .SE DOMAIN

.se Domain: The Official Country Extension of Sweden

.se is the country-code extension of Sweden and entered the root zone on 4 September 1986, making it one of the oldest country extensions still in daily use. The registry is The Swedish Internet Foundation (Internetstiftelsen), an independent public-interest foundation whose mandate rests on an act of parliament: the Swedish Top-level Domains Act (2006:24). The registration terms in force are dated 15 January 2026 and are published in full on the foundation's site. At the end of July 2026 the zone held 1,475,495 active names.

You do not need a Swedish company, address or representative. Clause 3.1.1 sets a single condition: the applicant must be identifiable in an official register. Clause 4.1.1 spells out what that means for foreign applicants — anyone other than a Swedish holder may supply «foreign equivalent identification information», so a Turkish company applies with its trade register number and an individual with a national ID number. The same clause draws the line: information supplied in order to shield an identity may be treated as incorrect, so proxy holding does not work here. The third level com.se is run by a different operator.

Missing a renewal date does not cost you the name straight away. It first spends ten days in «expired» status, then sixty days «deactivated», and throughout those sixty days the existing holder can still renew. A failing reseller is not a risk either: clause 8 makes the foundation itself the temporary registrar when a registrar agreement ends. On a registrar change the losing registrar may charge nothing and must release the authorisation code within five working days. Check whether the name you want is free on the domain name search page.

Your name survives your reseller: Clause 8 of the registration terms provides that when a registrar's agreement with the foundation — or with you — ends, The Swedish Internet Foundation becomes the temporary registrar itself, and the name stays live until you choose a new one. Clause 5.3 adds a notice period: a registrar may only terminate with at least three months' written notice, and the notice must explain how to move to another registrar. Most registries offer no equivalent. View required documents →

.se Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Grace period 10 days First window to renew after expiry
Redemption period 60 days You can still get it back by renewing
Pending delete period 7 days The last stage before deletion

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: for .se the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .se, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .se, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered it is yours for the term you chose and the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date. The windows that follow expiry are: Redemption (60 days), Pending delete (7 days). At the end of day 67 the name is open to anyone again. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .se address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 60

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

Day 60 – 67

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 67

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .se Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Yes. Clause 3.1.1 of the registration terms does not ask for Swedish residency; it asks that the applicant be identifiable in an official register. Clause 4.1.1 opens this explicitly to foreign applicants, who may supply «foreign equivalent identification information». In practice a company states its trade register number and an individual a national identity number. No Swedish branch, address or representative is needed, and no trustee service is involved.

  • None at the point of registration. Clause 4.1.1 asks for four items only: full company name and contact person (or first and last name for an individual), corporate or personal identity number, telephone and e-mail. Documents enter later: the foundation continuously cross-checks registry data against external sources such as the Swedish Companies Registration Office and the population register, and may then ask for electronic identification or a physical ID or registration certificate. Incorrect information can lead to deactivation.

  • Yes, within the character table the registry publishes for .se. Beyond a-z and 0-9 the table covers the Swedish letters å, ä and ö together with the letters needed for Sweden's official minority languages — Finnish, Meänkieli, the Sami languages, Yiddish and Romani. The set is defined by that table rather than by Unicode at large, so confirm that your preferred spelling is covered before you order.

  • Clause 5.1.7 places two duties on the losing registrar: it must release the authorisation code within five working days of your request, and it may not charge a fee for the registrar change. If the code does not arrive in time, The Swedish Internet Foundation is entitled to generate and pass it to you itself. A change of holder is a separate operation and must be completed within five working days once the new holder has accepted the terms. You can start on the domain transfer page.

  • The name spends ten days in «expired» status, then sixty days «deactivated». Throughout those sixty days the existing holder can still renew. If the period passes, the holder is deregistered and the name is held in quarantine by the foundation until its release date. Release happens no earlier than 04:00 UTC, and the list of deactivated names is refreshed every night, so upcoming releases are public information.

  • They belong to different organisations. .se is run by Sweden's national registry, The Swedish Internet Foundation, under an act of parliament. com.se is an ordinary name inside the .se register, and the third level beneath it is operated by CentralNic; clause 3.2.6 of the .se terms states that subdomains are administered by the holder of the name in question. Eligibility is looser at com.se, while national identity is strongest directly under .se.

  • Through the registry's own alternative dispute resolution procedure, administered by the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. Clause 7.2 requires three cumulative conditions: similarity to a sign legally recognised in Sweden, bad faith, and the absence of any right or legitimate interest on the holder's side. The list of grounds goes well beyond trademarks — surnames, artist names, titles of copyrighted works and EU geographical indications all count. Decisions take effect fourteen days after the foundation receives them.
