Frequently Asked Questions About .org.im Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. The namespace follows the same rulebook as .im, and rule 3.2 states explicitly that the registry does not restrict who may apply, which names may be held or how many; applications are accepted first come, first served. There is no non-profit, legal-entity or Isle of Man residence requirement, and no document is requested.

  • Measurement supports that. Among the names queried on 13 August 2026, shop.org.im (expiring 28 June 2027) and mail.org.im (28 December 2026) were registered while test.org.im was free. In the sibling namespaces all three of those names were taken, so org.im is comparatively thinner. For the current state, check your candidate on the domain search page.

  • Rule 6 sets out the appeal route: within 10 days of the refusal notice you may use the appeal process on the website to state why the name should be approved. The appeal is considered by the government's Designated Official and that decision is final; the outcome is sent to the email address given in the appeal. The registration fee paid for a refused name is refunded within 30 days.

  • Expiry notices go to all contacts 60, 30, 5 and 1 day in advance. On the expiry date the name is de-listed from the .im name servers, so the site and email stop resolving; one month later it becomes available to any party, and renewal is still possible within that window. Terms are fixed at 1, 2, 5 and 10 years, and if an individual holder dies the estate must transfer the name within a year.

  • Neither is. Rule 4.3 states that internationalised domain names are not offered and that names beginning with "xn--" may not be registered; a name may contain only a-z, 0-9 and the hyphen. On DNSSEC the measurement is clear: the root zone holds no DS record for .im, the parent zone is unsigned, and since org.im has no separate zone record no separate chain can be built either.
