WHAT IS A .COM.KW DOMAIN

com.kw Domain: Kuwait's Zone for Registered Businesses

com.kw is the State of Kuwait's zone for commercial and professional entities. It is run by the Communications and Information Technology Regulatory Authority (CITRA); the definitions annex of the registration policy gives CITRA both the regulator role and the registry operator role. Kuwait has no direct second-level registration today: the registry's own FAQ states that a name in the form example.kw is not currently available and that any future opening will be announced.

The zone is open to commercial and professional entities officially registered in Kuwait. Article 10.1 of the policy asks for a valid licence issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, or ownership of a trademark registered in Kuwait — or proof of authorisation to use an international trademark — plus a signature approval certificate and a copy of the civil ID of one authorised signatory. For law firms, medical practices, audit and engineering offices, a professional certificate replaces the commercial licence.

Technically com.kw carries this namespace's strongest feature: .kw is signed in the root, and com.kw itself is a signed delegation with its own DS record — which means DNS answers for names in the zone can be validated back to their source. The registry also masks registrant details in WHOIS by default. Check the name you want on the domain search page.

The post-expiry chain has three steps and is generous: The registry's expiry policy first grants a late renewal period of 30 calendar days, during which the name can be renewed immediately and without any fine. A service suspension period of 60 calendar days follows; the name is blocked and suspended, so it stops working, but it can still be rescued by paying a fine equal to double the renewal value, and the registrar is required to send a reminder during that period. Last comes a deletion stage of 5 calendar days, where renewal is no longer possible and the name returns to the available pool. View required documents →

In short: for .com.kw the post-expiry timeline is set by the registry, so it differs from one extension to the next. The diagram below shows the windows that actually apply to .com.kw, day by day. One thing never changes, whichever extension you hold: renewing before the expiry date is always the cheapest and safest route.

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .com.kw address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 2 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

Day 0 – 60

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

Day 60 – 65

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

After day 65

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.kw Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Article 10.1 of the registration policy lists five items: a valid licence certificate issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, or ownership of a trademark registered in Kuwait or proof of authorisation to use an international trademark; for law firms, medical practices, audit and engineering offices a professional certificate replaces the commercial licence; a signature approval certificate; and a copy of the civil ID card of one authorised signatory. Documents go to your accredited registrar, not to the registry.

  • Not today. The registry's FAQ asks the question by name and answers it in one sentence: a registration in the form example.kw is not currently available, and any future opening will be announced separately. Taking a name in the Kuwaiti namespace therefore means taking a three-level name. The zones open today are com.kw, net.kw, org.kw, edu.kw, gov.kw and ind.kw, which is reserved for individuals.

  • There are only two options. Article 5 of the registration policy lets the applicant choose a one-year or two-year licence period, article 5.1 of the expiry policy limits renewals to the same two, and the registry's FAQ gives the same answer: one year minimum, two years maximum. Three years or more is simply not defined in Kuwait, so plan your renewal calendar around that.

  • The registry's FAQ follows the ICANN standard: the name must be at least 2 and at most 63 characters, may contain only letters a-z, digits 0-9 and the hyphen, may neither begin nor end with a hyphen, may not contain a hyphen in the third or fourth position, and may not include a space. Article 9.1 of the registration policy adds one more rule: the name may not contain two consecutive hyphens.

  • Yes, and the window runs to ninety days in total. The expiry policy first grants a late renewal period of 30 calendar days, in which the name is renewed immediately and without any fine. A service suspension period of 60 calendar days follows: the name is blocked and stops working, but it can still be rescued by paying a fine equal to double the renewal value. Last comes a five-day deletion stage, where renewal is no longer possible.

  • Yes, and that sets it apart among the zones of the Gulf region. The root zone holds a DS record for .kw, and com.kw itself carries a separate DS record; both were verified on 11 August 2026. In practice this means DNS answers for a name under com.kw can be validated by a chain of signatures all the way to the root, so a tampered answer is detected by validating resolvers.

  • Registrant details are masked by default. The registry WHOIS returns the name, street, city, postal code, phone, fax and email fields as «REDACTED FOR PRIVACY»; what stays visible is the organisation name and the country. CITRA also publishes a separate document titled «Privacy Policy and WHOIS Data». Privacy here is therefore not a paid add-on but the default behaviour of the zone. You can look a record up on the whois search page.
