WHAT IS A .COM.MT DOMAIN

com.mt Domain: Malta's Third Level Zone for Business

com.mt is the commercial domain zone of the Republic of Malta, operated by NIC (Malta) from the University of Malta campus. The table in article 3.2 of the registration policy lists the five zones under which third level names may be registered, and the com.mt row reads «operate on a commercial basis e.g. limited liability companies». Its siblings are reserved: org.mt for non-profit bodies, net.mt for providers of Internet network services, edu.mt for education institutions recognised by Malta's Ministry of Education, and gov.mt for the Government of Malta.

There is no requirement to be established in Malta — article 4.3 says so explicitly. What com.mt does have is a condition of its own: article 4.1 requires the applicant to declare the right to use the registered label as a Full Trade Mark or Trade or Business Name in accordance with Maltese law. That is a test of rights, not of residence; the question is not where you are but whether Maltese law recognises your claim to the label. Without such a right, direct .mt registration is exempt from the condition.

Names are registered for an initial period of one year; renewals run for one or two years and the fee must be settled before the expiry date. Registration is handled directly with NIC (Malta), and as the Holder you appoint the Administrative, Billing and Technical Agents. Article 6.2 forbids second level holders from selling third level registrations under their own name. Check the status of the name you want on the domain search page.

A declaration is required, a document is not — but the check comes later: No rule text lists a trademark certificate or company registry extract to be filed with a com.mt application; article 4.1 asks for a declaration. The enforcement sits in condition 4.2 of the terms: should it later transpire that you were not entitled to use the trade mark, trade or business name stated on the registration form under Maltese law, you assume full responsibility for any resulting damages and the registry may delete the offending domain indefinitely. So there is no paperwork, but the eligibility is real — clarify your claim to the label before applying. View required documents →

Frequently Asked Questions About .com.mt Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. Article 4.3 of the registration policy states that «there is no requirement for the Holder to be established in Malta»; you do not need a Maltese company, an office or a local representative. What com.mt does require is a matter of rights: article 4.1 asks you to declare the right to use the registered label as a Full Trade Mark or Trade or Business Name in accordance with Maltese law. The question is not where you are based but whether Maltese law recognises your claim to that label.

  • None. No rule text lists a trademark certificate or company registry extract to be filed with the application; article 4.1 asks for a declaration, not a document. The check comes afterwards: condition 4.2 of the terms provides that should it later transpire you were not entitled under Maltese law to use the trade mark or name stated on the form, you assume full responsibility for the resulting damages and the registry may delete the domain indefinitely. There is no paperwork, but the eligibility is genuine.

  • Yes, and the difference sits in a single article. Article 4.1 requires a declaration of a trade mark or trade name right under Maltese law for third level names, while the article immediately after it, 4.2, does not impose the same condition on second level names — it lists only three promises. Comparing the two turns that silence into a deliberate choice. For an applicant with no Maltese trade mark or business name, the accessible extension is .mt; taking both is possible too.

  • New names are registered for an initial period of one year, as the registry states on its fee page. Existing names can then be renewed for one year or two year periods. There is no multi-year option at first registration. The price of a new name combines a one-time set-up charge with the annual registration fee, and the registry notes that fees for new domains must be settled within one month of registration to avoid suspension or cancellation of the domain.

  • No recovery route is guaranteed in the rules. The registry states that renewal fees become due two months before expiry and must be settled before expiry to avoid suspension or cancellation; condition 13.3 of the terms says non-payment may, at the registry's discretion, result in suspension or revocation. Malta publishes no redemption period and no late renewal window, and no document defines a counted recovery period. Renewing well ahead of the expiry date is therefore the only reliable approach.

  • Yes, subject to the registry's consent. Policy articles 5.12 to 5.14 deal with a name passing to another Holder and confirm that rights and obligations transfer with it; condition 17.1 of the terms makes any assignment subject to «our prior written consent». Malta has no registrar-to-registrar transfer; the equivalent operation is a change of agent. Condition 13.4 adds that if the Administrative Agent renounces the role, the Holder must appoint a replacement, otherwise the domain may be suspended or revoked.

  • No. Article 6.2 of the policy forbids holders of second level names from selling or otherwise making third level registrations under their registered name available to other legal entities. The single exception is the corporate group: you may make the name available to your holding, subsidiary, parent or sister company, or to an entity forming part of your corporate structure. The rule exists to stop the .mt namespace turning into a secondary market, and breaching it can cost you the registration.
