WHAT IS A .MONEY DOMAIN

.money Domain: A Broad Ending for Work Involving Money

.money entered the root zone on 20 November 2014 under an ICANN registry agreement dated 16 October 2014, and the current contracting party is Binky Moon, LLC. The word covers no single financial product but any work concerned with earning, saving, moving or managing money. As of 12 August 2026 the zone holds 28,532 registrations, 21,575 of them published.

Personal budgeting tools, comparison sites, financial literacy publications, accountancy and advisory practices, payment and remittance products and training programmes all sit in this zone. There is no eligibility test. Try candidates on the .money domain search screen, and look at the .mortgage page if home lending is the specific subject.

This address confers no financial authority whatsoever

The agreement requires registrars to place in their registration contracts an obligation on registrants to comply with law on privacy, data collection, consumer protection, fair lending and debt collection, and requires those who collect sensitive health and financial data to implement reasonable, proportionate security. What it does not do is verify any licence, authorisation or credential at any stage — this ending does not even carry the clause that takes a representation about credentials. The address therefore changes nothing about whether the business behind it is regulated: the obligation follows the activity, not the domain.

.money Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .money domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .money, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .money address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .money domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $6.73 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .money returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .money Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • No. The extension's agreement carries an open registration commitment and the registry verifies no licence, authorisation or credential at any point. The converse also holds: registering the address gives you no authority to carry on a regulated activity. The obligation attaches to what you do. Check availability on the .money search page.

  • The extension verifies no organisation, so the trust signal has to come from the site itself: a clear imprint, the trading name, an address, any authorisation number and who is accountable. The agreement obliges the registry to act on abuse reports, but it performs no vetting in advance. As a visitor you can check who a name is registered to from the whois search page.

  • The agreement requires registrants who collect sensitive health and financial data to implement security measures reasonable and proportionate to the service offered. In practice that means forms running over HTTPS, dropping fields you do not need, defining a retention period and limiting who can reach the records. Compare certificate options on the SSL certificate page and verify the installation afterwards.

  • Largely not. As of 12 August 2026 there are 28,532 registrations and 21,575 are published, so names that look taken are mostly in use. Combining your brand with the type of service you provide produces a result faster than chasing a bare word. To try several combinations at once, use the bulk domain search screen.

  • The extension follows standard gTLD transfer rules. Obtain the authorisation code, lift the transfer lock and start the request at the new registrar. With financial products the name usually sits in a corporate account whose authorised contact has since changed, so establish who can actually reach that account before you begin. Run it from the domain transfer page.

  • Look-alike spellings are among the most common risks in financial content. Register the frequent misspellings and close variants of your brand yourself, choose long terms for the critical ones and watch new registrations regularly. If you find an imitation, report it to the registrar and through the registry's abuse channel — the agreement makes handling such reports mandatory.
