WHAT IS A .PRODUCTIONS DOMAIN

The .productions Domain: Naming the Business of Making

The .productions domain entered the root zone on 6 February 2014 under an ICANN agreement dated 5 December 2013, with Binky Moon, LLC of the Identity Digital group as contracting party. That same contract date applies to the sibling extension .properties, and the two zones were entered in the root a week apart. On 13 August 2026 the zone held 14,083 registrations.

Film and television production companies, the production arms of advertising agencies, music and audio studios, event and stage producers and independent content makers populate the zone. The plural describes an ongoing body of work rather than a single project, which suits a company more naturally than a one-off title. Test candidates in .productions domain search and compare a broader option on the .media page.

Two agreements signed the same day, two different trades

The .productions and .properties agreements were both signed on 5 December 2013, belong to the same registry and carry the same set of commitments. The two zones nonetheless serve entirely separate industries and differ in size. The practical lesson is worth carrying into any choice: two extensions sharing a registry are not therefore alternatives to each other. When you pick one, look at the expectation the word creates in a visitor, not at who operates it.

.productions Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .productions domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .productions, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .productions address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .productions domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $6.73 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .productions returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .productions Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • You need not. The open registration commitment forbids the registry from applying an identity-based eligibility limit, so no company record, producer credential or industry membership can be requested. An independent content maker registers on exactly the same terms as a corporate studio. Try candidates in .productions domain search.

  • Usually not. A plural implies an ongoing body of work, and used as the address of one film or one event it creates an expectation the site cannot meet. For a single production, taking the project name as the label and choosing a plainer extension reads more consistently. See the broader alternative on the .media page.

  • On 13 August 2026 the zone held 14,083 registrations with 10,660 present in the zone file, a share of about 76 per cent. A long descriptive word holds little appeal for speculative buyers, so the zone consists mostly of people actually using their names. If the name you want is taken, whois search shows who holds the record.

  • On pages hosting video, load time decides the first impression, so serve heavy files through a video service rather than straight off your own server. Where the rights are not yours, keep the scope of your licence in writing. If an enquiry or quote form exists, the page needs a certificate; see the SSL certificate page.

  • Use the company name. The extension already states what you do, so repeating the trade in the label lengthens the address for nothing and makes it harder to pass on by voice. Where your company name is very common, adding a city or a speciality restores distinctiveness. Try variants together in bulk domain name search.

  • The name must be unlocked, you need the authorisation code from your current registrar, and the contact address on the record has to work. No extra eligibility review applies and no paperwork is collected. A practical tip for video-heavy sites: export a copy of your DNS records first, because media sub-domains are the entries most often overlooked. Begin at the domain transfer page.
