Buy .ro Domain Name

The RoTLD registration rules close this question in one sentence: any legal or natural person, regardless of the country they are in, may register a .ro name. There is no residency requirement, no Romanian address, no local contact person and no trustee arrangement. That is unusually open by European ccTLD standards: a company applying from abroad and a company in Bucharest fall under the same rule and go through the same process.

The rules attach a document requirement to exactly one zone: .tm.ro, reserved for registered trade marks. There, proof from a trade mark register — OSIM in Romania or an equivalent body — is required. For .ro and the other zones what is asked for is not a document but an accurate and complete application form, and RoTLD reserves the right to seek confirmation that the information given is genuine. Applying from abroad is therefore not a paperwork exercise.

RoTLD moved to an annual registration and maintenance system on 1 March 2018. According to the registry's own announcement, names are registered or renewed for a minimum of one year and a maximum of ten. The earlier model rested on a one-off payment and names effectively ran without end, so if you have taken over a name from that period, remember that it now sits on an annual renewal calendar.

A name whose annual maintenance fee goes unpaid enters the state «pendingDelete». This is not the point at which the name is lost, but it is the point at which it stops working: the website and mail effectively go dark. The registry then deletes such a name automatically after 90 days, returning it to general availability. Renewal and certain transfers remain possible within that window, so the 90 days act as a recovery period.

A name may be up to 63 characters long, excluding the suffix. The allowed characters are alphanumeric (a-z, A-Z, 0-9) and the hyphen; a name may neither begin nor end with a hyphen. In addition, Romanian diacritics — ă, â, î, ş, ţ — have been usable since 2 June 2015. That date matters if you want to register a Romanian brand in its correct spelling: the versions with and without diacritics are separate names.

Applications are processed by RoTLD automatically and in chronological order; in the wording of the rules, «primul venit, primul servit» — first come, first served. The queue is set by the moment the request reaches the registry, not by who the applicant is. The practical consequence is that a name showing as free in a search is not yet yours, and it is not held for you while you decide.

RoTLD does not decide disputes itself. They are handled by two accredited providers: WIPO in Geneva and Forum in Minneapolis. The procedure follows the UDRP framework and requires three elements to be shown together — the complainant's prior right in an identical or confusingly similar designation, the holder's lack of rights or legitimate interests, and registration or use of the name in bad faith. Where the complaint succeeds, the right of use is transferred after 10 business days.

All three are zones run by the same registry under the same eligibility rule; the difference lies in intended use. .ro is unrestricted. The rules attach .com.ro to commercial firms, products and services, and .org.ro to non-profit organisations, social organisations and civil associations. RoTLD's list also includes further zones alongside these, among them .tm.ro, .nom.ro, .info.ro and .store.ro.
