WHAT IS A .KR DOMAIN

.kr Domain: South Korea's Official Country Extension

.kr is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) of South Korea, entered into the root zone on 29 September 1986. In the IANA record the sponsoring organisation is the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) and the administrative contact is the Korea Network Information Center (KRNIC) within KISA. The zone is governed by the Domain Name Management Rules made under Article 13 of the Internet Address Resources Act; they took effect on 31 December 2004 and were last amended on 30 October 2024.

The defining rule sits in Article 4 and admits no exception: both the applicant and the registrant must have an address in the Republic of Korea. For an application made from abroad, a Korean address is therefore at the centre of the process. A name can be taken directly under .kr or under one of the purpose-specific third-level zones; the zone set aside for commercial use is .co.kr, which is open to corporations and individuals alike.

Allocation follows what Article 9 calls the order of arrival of the application forms; KISA may use a separate method only where the public interest requires it. The accuracy of registration data carries its own sanction: Article 11 allows a registration to be cancelled 30 days after the data is found to be false, with a 30-day suspension running before cancellation. Check the name you have in mind with domain search.

The Korean address is the basis of the record, not a formality: The address requirement in Article 4 is not merely a question asked at the moment of application; the registrant is expected to keep meeting it. Article 11 provides that where registration data is found to be false, the record can be cancelled after a 30-day suspension. In practice this means that for a .kr name managed from abroad, the risk of a stale Korean address or contact is administrative rather than technical — and it ends with the address no longer resolving.

Domain lifecycle

The stages in order, from registration to release
Available Before registration
Active 1 - 2 years
Redemption 1 days
Pending delete 1 days
Available Open again

Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .kr address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 2 years

Once registration is complete the domain is yours for the term you chose. You can renew at any point before expiry to keep it uninterrupted, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Redemption Period (Redemption Period)

1 days

The domain is not released the moment it expires — during this window it is still yours and can be recovered. Some extensions charge an extra restore fee at this stage, so renewing before expiry is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete Period (Pending Delete Period)

1 days

If the redemption window is missed too, the domain enters the final stage and waits to be deleted. Renewal and recovery are no longer possible here; when the period ends the registration is removed for good.

Domain Is Available Again

Open-ended

Once deletion completes, the domain leaves the system and anyone can register it — popular names are often taken the same minute by someone watching. Keep auto-renewal on so a name you care about never gets this far.

Frequently Asked Questions About .kr Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • Article 4 of the rules is a single sentence and admits no exception: both the applicant and the registrant must have an address in the Republic of Korea. The condition is defined by address rather than nationality, so what matters is holding a valid Korean address. The third-level zone set aside for commercial use is .co.kr, which under Attached Table 1 is open to corporations and individuals alike.

  • The requirement that the registrant hold an address in Korea applies to applications made from abroad as well; Article 4 grants no exemption on that point. In practice this means that for a company without a Korean address the governing item is not the registration itself but arranging a valid in-country address and contact. Once that arrangement is in place the registration proceeds normally, and allocation follows the order in which applications arrive.

  • A name can be taken directly under .kr or under one of the purpose-specific third-level zones. The main ones in Attached Table 1 are:

    • co — corporations and individuals
    • ne — network services
    • or — non-profit corporations and organisations
    • re — research institutes, pe — individuals
    • go, mil, ac — government, military and academic bodies
    • regional names such as seoul and busan
  • Yes. Names taken directly under .kr run from 3 to 63 characters and may contain Hangeul syllables; where Hangeul is used the length runs from 2 to 17 characters. Latin names use A-Z, 0-9 and the hyphen. A name may not begin with a hyphen or with 'xn--', and may not end with a hyphen. A Korean-script name makes the address easier to read in local search results, which is why campaigns aimed at that market often prefer one.

  • Article 9 of the rules ties allocation to the order of arrival of the application forms; KISA may use a separate method only where the public interest requires it. There is therefore no reservation and no negotiation — priority belongs to whoever is prepared. If two parties want the same name, what decides it is when the application arrived. If the name you want is free, waiting gains you nothing; check it with domain search.

  • Article 11 of the rules provides that a registration may be cancelled 30 days after the data is found to be false, with a 30-day suspension running before cancellation. Suspension means the address stops resolving in practice — website and email go down. Article 10 requires changes to registration data to be reported to KISA through a registrar. When an address or a responsible person changes, filing that update without delay removes the risk at its source.

  • Article 25 of the rules lists what a domain lookup shows: the registrant's name and address, details of the management officer, name server information, the registrar's name and the registration dates. The same article forbids KISA and the registrars from using that data, or passing it to third parties, beyond the scope stated in the terms of use. You can run the lookup on the whois search page.

  • Article 12 of the rules opens a route to the Internet Address Dispute Resolution Committee for anyone in dispute over the registration, holding or use of a domain name. Where the parties accept — or are deemed to have accepted — a draft conciliation, and where a court decision becomes final, KISA or the registrar acts on the result. Keeping clear of someone else's mark when you choose a name makes the whole procedure unnecessary.
