WHAT IS A .TOURS DOMAIN

.tours Domain: A Direct Address for Guided Programmes

The .tours extension entered the root on 12 March 2015; its ICANN agreement is dated 22 January 2015 and the contracting party is Binky Moon, LLC. Tour operators, day-trip organisers, guided city walks and narrow services such as boat, balloon or themed tours all take names here. No eligibility condition applies, so an agency licence, chamber registration or professional qualification is never requested.

Its place inside the travel family invites confusion, so the distinction is worth drawing early: .travel in the same family is a community extension and requires an eligibility review before registration, while .tours is entirely open. Measured on 14 August 2026, 13,031 of 16,567 registrations were live. Test programme names and route combinations on the .tours domain search page.

One sector, two different regimes

Registering a .tours name requires no condition at all, whereas the .travel agreement makes an eligibility review compulsory before registrations complete. Both address the same sector, but their doors are not the same. The decision rule: choose .tours for a fast address with no conditions, and consider .travel when you want an address whose sector membership is checked under the agreement.

.tours Domain Lifecycle

Active registration term 1 - 10 years You choose it at registration
Renewal window 20 days After expiry, with a late renewal fee
Redemption period 30 days After deletion, with a restore fee
Last day to act Day 50 After this day there is no way back

What happens day by day after it expires

Day 0 is the domain's expiry date

In short: your .tours domain is put on Client Hold on its expiry date, so the site and e-mail stop that same day. You can still renew during the first 20 days, but from this point a late renewal fee is added on top of the renewal price. On day 20 the registration is deleted and until day 50 only a paid restore brings it back. Nothing at all can be done in the 5 days that follow, and on day 55 the name is open to anyone. There is exactly one way never to enter this chain: keep auto-renewal on.

What happens day by day after it expires Lifecycle diagram for .tours, left to right: the name starts out available; once registered, the site and e-mail work; day 0 is the expiry date and the domain goes on Client Hold; for the first 20 days renewal at the normal price stays open; on day 20 the registration is deleted and a 30-day redemption period begins; on day 50 redemption closes and a 5-day pending delete window starts; on day 55 the name is open to anyone again. The site and e-mail stay down from day 0 through day 55. Domain Is Available (Available)

Open-ended

A .tours address at this stage has not been taken yet, and it goes to whoever registers first. Check the name you have in mind — if it is free, it can be yours within minutes.

Domain Is Active (Active Period)

1 - 10 years

Once registration is complete, the domain is registered to you for the term you selected. You can renew at any point before it expires to keep it active, or switch on auto-renewal so you never have to watch the date.

Renewal Window (Client Hold)

Day 0 – 20

On its expiry date your .tours domain is put on Client Hold: the site and e-mail go down that day, but the registration is still yours. A single renewal within these first 20 days brings everything back exactly as it was — nothing is lost. The only difference is that a $11.12 late renewal fee is now added to the renewal price; renewing before the expiry date avoids that fee entirely.

Redemption Period (Redemption / RGP)

Day 20 – 50

On day 20 the registration is deleted and the 30-day redemption period that ICANN requires of every gTLD registry begins. The name is not released to anyone during this time; only you can take it back, by paying the restore fee, until day 50. That fee is far higher than a renewal — renewing on time is always the cheaper route.

Pending Delete (Pending Delete)

Day 50 – 55

Once the redemption window closes too, the domain enters its final 5 days and there is no way back. Neither renewal nor restore works here; nobody — your registrar included — can return the name to you. The registry uses this window as the last hold before the name goes back into the pool.

Open to Anyone Again (Released)

After day 55

On day 55 the name .tours returns to the pool and anyone can register it. Sought-after names are often gone within seconds, and there is no guaranteed way to get one back. Yet staying out of this timeline is entirely in your hands: leave auto-renewal on and the expiry date will never catch you off guard.

The timeline above is the schedule Atak Domain applies and publishes. The ICANN chart you will find elsewhere shows a renewal window of up to 45 days after expiry; ICANN's policy on expired registrations (section 2.2.1) lets registrars delete an expired domain at any time, provided they disclose their policy in advance. We apply that window as 20 days and publish it here in plain sight. Full text of the policy: ICANN Expired Registration Recovery Policy

Frequently Asked Questions About .tours Domains

The questions people actually ask before registering — answered plainly.

  • The difference at the door decides it. Registering .tours requires no condition, while the .travel agreement makes an eligibility review compulsory before registrations complete. The second records your sector membership at contract level; the first does not. If you need to show a corporate client that you belong to the sector, that distinction helps, and if you need speed, .tours is the practical route.

  • Putting the route or theme in the root reads most clearly. A word such as "cappadocia" or "balloon" tells visitors what they are about to buy before they click. If your company name is already known, prefer it and build routes as subdirectories. Keep seasons and years out of the address, because a changed programme makes the address look stale and links fall flat.

  • Nearly all of them. Obligations covering package travel, cancellation and refund terms, insurance and guiding rules arise from your activity; registering a domain grants no authority and removes no duty. The agreement points the same way, since registrars must require holders to comply with applicable law, including consumer protection rules that apply wherever you sell.

  • It is mid-sized with room to spare. On 14 August 2026 it held 16,567 registrations with 13,031 live, so the zone is genuinely used yet far from saturated. Combinations of city, route and theme leave a wide field, and roots built on non-English words are largely untouched. Try a few ideas together with bulk domain name search.

  • An encrypted connection comes first. Publishing a form that collects names, phone numbers, passport details or payment data without a certificate lowers conversion directly, because of the browser warning. The second step is separating backups and communication: send booking mail to a company mailbox rather than a personal account. Compare certificates on the SSL certificate page.
